My advice, unless you really really like touchscreens, is go for the 9900. It's RIM's baby. Better construction, NFC, more support, earlier OS releases, etc.

The phone is protected by one-year manufacturer's warranty. You're still covered. The channels to get that warranty honored may not be as convenient, since you're not he original purchaser; then again, if it's a bell phone and you're with bell, they still may help you out.

I don't think it's a common problem at all. There are a few threads about the symptom, but none have really gotten much attention. For the most part, people who have gotten replacement devices haven't had the symptom recur. My wife got the 9850 around Christmas and the symptom isn't present for her. I got mine and release day and I have the symptom. If it is hardware related, I would tend to believe that a 9850 purchased today would not have the problem.

    Sooo... I think you're safe. It's a great phone. I love mine.

Personally, I like the touch screen. not necessarily for the touchiness, but more for the benefits of the larger screen.

The Bold has this over the Torch: NFC, glass screen

Torch has this over Bold: Large screen. great for browsing, media, and more. One such thing is menus. Sometimes the phone will ask me if something is okay. On my dad's Bold the accept/reject or whatever button is offscreen. On my Torch, I can see the entire prompt and the selections/options. Small thing, but it is nice.

To me, the biggest appointment in my Torce is the plastic screen. It is more likely to scrach, especially small hairline scratches that buildup over time. I got the phone on release day. Since then I have accumulated a some hairline scratching, but it is negligible as it's only noticeable when the screen backlight is off and the phone is held at an angle. It is completely unnoticed by me while using the phone.

    Hope that helps.

btw, I've recommended both phones to people. I think both are great devices and I don't think you'll be unhappy with either one.

Yes, I do think it's a hardware problem. The problem began about 2 months after my purchase from an online store. I tried security wipe, and reinstall everything one by one. The 9860 worked fine for a little while, and then it started again, and getting worse. I repeated this procedure for 3 times, same result

Buying this Torch was a terrible mistake on my part. Hoping it to be great and versatile, I can't use it effectively now. I now reuse my "old" iPhone 4G, which was waaaaaayy more sophisticated than BBs. The only reason I bought the BB was because some colleauges, friends and relatives use BB, and it's easier (and cheaper) to communicate via BBM. Now I've thrown away the 9860

Really? you threw it away? Did you even try to get the device replaced via warranty?

If the back button symptom was your only thing stopping you from enjoying the BB experience, then I think it was silly not to at least try replacing the device which is protected by a one-year warranty.

It doesn't have international warranty. I bought it in the US and brought it to Asia, where I live. Besides, I use BB more because most of my friends and colleagues are using it, so it's easier and cheaper to communicate, and not because I love it.. I now use 9790.

    Hi Everyone,

I am not sure if there is a newer thread but if there is I havent seen it.

I too have a 9860 with the button issue. When I touch the the call button the rest (BB, back and hangup/power buttons work perfectly) I dont even need to actually press down the call button just touch it.

I have taken the phone appart hoping to be able to take appart they keypad but it appears that the keypad is glued to the front of the phone with the digitizer. Only the trackpad is easily removable.

Does anyone know if its possible to take it appart? My other option is to replace the whole from (around 35 dollars from ebay it seems)

    saludos,

You're right...I tried that a couple of minutes ago when my back button stopped working. Very strange!

Default Vlingo Interfering with back button

The problem is definitely Vlingo and not the hardware or other software running on the device. I have a 9930 which has run fairly well for the past year. When Vlingo is installed the back button lags severely, requiring several presses before it responds. As soon as the Vlingo is removed, the lag disappears. When I tried the install again, the problem returned and when uninstalled, the problem disappeared. The proposed fix doesn't work. I really like Vlingo and would prefer not to delete it, but it has such a drag on the device I'm not sure I have a choice.

I said it before, and repeat, it's hardware problem, buy the front case (includes the buttons and connectors) from Rounded.com, and install it ypourself. I did that and my 9860 is working perfect.

    Default Strange button issues

I also get the menu and back button issues. I wiped the handset and removed all user installed applications. The problem still persist. I have the enterprise e-Main configured.

It does seem like a hardware issue. My observation is.

If we open e-Mail application after the phone is idle for a long time, the back button and menu button will not operate for many press ( 10 times). Then start working. Once it works there is no problem if you use it without much idling time.

Is it a problem only with 7.1? Because I started getting this issue after upgrade to 7.1

gotta get a screen protector...whether its glass or plastic. I personally use the Zagg InvisibleSheild. Actually, its the only screen protector I'll ever use again. It doesn't scratch and is very fingerprint and smudge resistant.

Hey, I tried the pressing the call/send button and the back/escape button at the same time and it seems to have fixed my trackpad....from what I've seen from here on the forums, it sure seems like a hardware issue. My issue with my trackpad happened after I ended up sleeping on my phone. It is also a pocket phone and I'm sure gets squeezed there occasionally. I wonder if the RIM pocket case for the phone would cause this as well, or would it protect the buttons from being pressed.
