Its there in all the blackberries but in the new ones its much more noticeable.
Check my youtube channel, the first video i made was about this - Zamkato's Channel - YouTube
It just keeps the device awake and doesn't let the phone's screen go off.

Don't know what the OP means by only a camera can pick up an IR sensor flashing.... I can see the red in my trackpad just fine without artificial optics. My naked eye could see the red in the trackpad before it was ever being discussed..... No one believed me..... Also I have no problem seeing the IR flash in my TV remote, Blu-Ray remote.... Etc etc... And I know its not just me cause my brother can see it all too. However I never saww the trackpad flash red or any color on my old 9700.... I also noticed that trackpad was purple not black like it looks. Maybe its a completely redesigned trackpad in these new phones?

Some people can see inferred but not as clearly, depending how sensitive your eyes are, I can see the inferred with my eyes too but only just and when its dark,

What i said about the cameras is, It See's inferred like any other bright lights which you Can not see to good with your eyes cos we Carnot see Seton colors with out technology gadgets that can see them for us in video color so we can see them,

ETC X-rays heat vision and colors which some animal's can see and we don't etc if we dint have the help from gadgets.

I only found this out with taking pics from my cyber sony camera, The trackpad was flickering like a bright LED light looking at it though cameras LCD screen. I though whys it doing that :/ and why so brightly through a camera and not see with out like that.

So i googled it and now i know about the hidden colors we carnt see or see to good with.
