I love the 9900 keyboard. Every time I try a working 9900, not the dummy phone, I love the keyboard. And I really don't mind the smaller screen. It's an excellent phone.
I chose the 9810 because it has the auto-focus camera and the screen is better for web browsing.
My playbook camera doesn't have auto-focus. I use my 9810 for close-up shots

easy question

Im coming off of a 9550. So while my first BB, and what made me fall inlove with BB was a 9000, I need that touch screen. Typing on the 9550 was horrible, well mine is, and i LOVE the keyboards of the Bold and Curve. My reason for the 9810 is simple, QWERTY + Touch Screen = Happy JAGWIRE~~ I am no longer active on this site ~~ - 04-28-2012, 06:35 AM #28
Coming from a 9800, the choice was easy. New device, faster, more storage space, same device I'm already used to, and a $50 price tag. Couldn't go wrong, and the fact the 9900 didn't come to ATT till months later, couldn't wait that long.
Although Ive gotten bored of the slide action, still much better then the tiny screen(really tough to use as a touch device), and lack of decent camera that they fuxed up on the 9900(with just the POS camera, not sure how this can be called their "flagship" device other then it has the bold name).Cell Phone History:Motorola Bag phone > Motorola Star Tac gen1 > Motorola Star Tac gen 2 > Motorola Razr > BlackBerry Pearl(8110) > Iphone gen1 > BlackBerry Curve(8310 Red) > BlackBerry Torch(9800 Black) > BlackBerry Torch II(9810 Gunmetal Silver) > BlackBerry Bold 9900) > BlackBerry Z10(STL100-3 Black)

Bigger Screen which gives me real touch screen experience... typing on the screen is fun and physical KB is ready when I need to type longer mails/sms... the internet is just awesome on this phone.. I just love the way this phone render wallpapers.... its beautiful... Camera is amazing... The overall feel of the phone is very solid build quality..

When I upgraded ATT didn't have the 9900 yet. I LOVE my 9810 but of I had the choice I would have picked the 9900 just for the Keyboard.

Why did YOU pick the 9810 over the 9900?
In my case I had an old Curve then I liked the large touch screen and the ability to tuck away the slider keyboard when not needed in the 9810. I've got a problem with my hand which doesn't help when using the touch screen for more than a few lines of text. With the keyboard I can type much faster with more accuracy. It's the best of both worlds..

i upgraded from the 9800 because it would be an easy transition, the 9810 had all the improvements i wanted to the 9800 form, and i just really feel like all the hassle of relearning a new phone.
i would have kept the 9800 longer, but i was bogging it down with memory data, and heavy use. the 9810 is much faster at getting things done.
i did think about when the salesman tried to get me to take the bold instead. it was tempting.

Both bezels are plastic, the one around the screen and the one around the keyboard. Both stamped ABS and are black on the underside. If it weren't plastic, when you bend it a bit to get it to pop off its little clips, it would stay bent and not pop back to its original shape. Also there are numerous threads around here about the paint chipping off the bezels. If said bezels were metal(stainless as some claim), when the paint flecks off you wouldn't see black underneath, the color would remain stainless even if chipped.
Had this conversation in another thread on here, posted a few things to try(although it damages the bezel) to prove it was plastic. Also dropped my 9800 in a deep fat fryer, metal wouldn't have melted like the plastic bezels did.
Trust me , Ive torn enough 9800's and frankenstiened my 9810 enough to know the bezels are plastic.Last edited by homer1475; 04-29-2012 at 07:44 AM.

Thin stainless is springy.
The 9800 doesn't have a stainless bezel around the main body, did you take apart a 9810
When I got my 9810 I noticed there were 3 options, a white one, a dark one, and the silver one I have. There is a difference between the top bezel and middle bezel...the top feels like plastic, the middle doesn't
Mine hasn't chipped to expose black underneath

Yes have torn both apart on many occasions(hence my frankenstiened 9810), same exact materials and same exact pieces. Give me a few minutes and Ill tear a spare 9800 I have that has the keyboard bezel from my 9810 on it, and Ill post pics.

Keyboard Bezel front as it faces on the device, you can see the black plastic on the top where it wraps around the device.

Backside view of same bezel. Again you can see the black plastic.

Same bezel squished a bit to prove its plastic and not thin springy stainless.

Top stamping of the bezel. Guess the aftermarket color I got was stamped ABS, thought the OEM was also stamped ABS.

See for yourself, take the 2 bottom screws out of the phone(back where the battery is). Then just simply starting where the carrier logo is, snap it gently off its clips. Definitely plastic.Cell Phone History:Motorola Bag phone > Motorola Star Tac gen1 > Motorola Star Tac gen 2 > Motorola Razr > BlackBerry Pearl(8110) > Iphone gen1 > BlackBerry Curve(8310 Red) > BlackBerry Torch(9800 Black) > BlackBerry Torch II(9810 Gunmetal Silver) > BlackBerry Bold 9900) > BlackBerry Z10(STL100-3 Black)

Just one more clarification. The 9800 came in 3 colors, white, red, and gunmetal chrome(think thats what they called it?), the 9810 only comes in 2 color, grey zinc, and white.
BlackBerry - Torch 9800 Slider Phone - New BlackBerry Torch Touch Screen Phones
Scroll down to see the available colors for the 9800 and 9810. They do show the grey for both, but I think its a misprint(or perhaps the color swatch doesn't show the exact black or grey), as the 9800 is blackish, and the 9810 is greyish.Cell Phone History:Motorola Bag phone > Motorola Star Tac gen1 > Motorola Star Tac gen 2 > Motorola Razr > BlackBerry Pearl(8110) > Iphone gen1 > BlackBerry Curve(8310 Red) > BlackBerry Torch(9800 Black) > BlackBerry Torch II(9810 Gunmetal Silver) > BlackBerry Bold 9900) > BlackBerry Z10(STL100-3 Black)

You have the dark 9810, I have the silver one.
I scratched mine and it's black underneath
The 9810 also comes in silver. - 04-29-2012, 10:25 AM #43
That's what I did...the black rubberized cover is not only easier to handle but makes it less feel less "cheap" than the silver cover. Find them on eBay really inexpensively.
Back on topic: I chose the 9810 over the bold primarily on price and the fact that the screen was bigger. My carrier was selling it unbranded for $299 outright vs $549 for the Bold. The plan that came with it included unlimited everything and BIS too for $38/month. Now that hotspot functionality has been added to the OS, this phone is a really good deal. I hook up my laptop and tablet to it out in my ventures around town.Last edited by chaosdivine; 04-29-2012 at 10:36 AM. Reason: Got back on topic.

Originally I have the grey zinc 9810, and several black 9800's, I swapped the zinc grey bezel on the 9810 for the black 9800 bezel.
There is no dark colored 9810. White, or zinc grey, only colors available.
I guess the zinc grey color doesn't exactly show in my pictures, but those are pictures of a zinc grey 9810 keyboard bezel.Cell Phone History:Motorola Bag phone > Motorola Star Tac gen1 > Motorola Star Tac gen 2 > Motorola Razr > BlackBerry Pearl(8110) > Iphone gen1 > BlackBerry Curve(8310 Red) > BlackBerry Torch(9800 Black) > BlackBerry Torch II(9810 Gunmetal Silver) > BlackBerry Bold 9900) > BlackBerry Z10(STL100-3 Black)

Because my wife... out of bitterness and jealousy of my beloved 9700 smashed it... and I was forced to use a pathetic POS Iphone for months until the BB7 phones came out. The 9810 came out on ATT before the 9900 did... and I refused to use that POS iphone for one second longer than necessary.

Honestly, it was the price ($70 difference) for minimal gain, NFC just wasn't worth it.
But saving the money, getting a nice full screen and a keyboard in a heavy, solid device? Worth it to me.
So far it's a match made in heaven (I love how all my messages are accessible via 1 app, along with all my social feeds) and the battery beats my old Nexus S hands down. There's some tweaks I wanna work out still (Why do all my SMS messages have a red ! for example) but it's closest to having me ditch my mp3 player
