Anyone know the ideal size for 9810 wallpaper? Is it 480x640 as seen a lot?

480 x 640 pixels is the size you should use, you can always use some picture editing software to resize and crop images if you need it to fit right.

I usually go 640x640, that way the image is the same no matter the orientation

I uploaded a bunch of old stock
Apple macbook wallpaper from my laptop and they're at 800x600. The OS 7 software allows you to crop where you like when choosing it as your wallpaper.
