Vendor File Question
Hi everyone! I'm currently (NOW) running the newest OS 7.1.378 on my Torch 9810and, I have a question that is bothering me regarding the vendor files that we need to delete prior to installing other carrier or leaked OS's. I deleted both files from my desktop prior to downloading and everything went perfectly and is working really great!
With that in mind, here is my question! I have DM on both my Desktop at office (main computer) and also on my netbook. I currently sync both ways with outlook programs (contacts, calendar, etc) on my desktop but, I only sync one way--from my 9810 to my netbook, allowing me to move my business contacts/apts from the Desktop to the phone nightly and then to the laptop syncing all my appointments, etc. on both computers, and change configuration if necessary.
So--today, I synced/backed up on the desktop like normal with the new OS and it went perfectly--then I plugged in the phone to my netbook and as it was loading I noticed that it still showed the 7.0 upgrade from AT&T, and hadn't read that the phone was now on 7.1! Then it hit me that maybe I should have deleted the vendor files on the laptop as well. I froze and held my breath but after a while it showed the 7.1 version on the DM and it seemed to sync and backup like normal. Once it was done, I looked on the netbook search and the vendor files are there, SO---should I delete the vendor files on the netbook as well to be safe, or is it not necessary. Please, any help on this will be much appreciated!!! Thank you!

It's only necessary to delete vendor.xml from the computer that you are using to install an OS. It's not read any other time and is harmless.

Thanks for the quick reply JeffH!
What's odd is that I noticed that when I do a search on my Desktop that I installed it on, it still shows one vendor file, but when I click on it, it says the file can't be found so I assume that the delete worked (don't know why it wouldn't or why it still shows) and I checked the recycle bin and they are both in there to be dumped so I'm not worried. Everything installed so smoothly that honestly, I was blown away. Thank you once again for your quick reply--Much appreciated and "thanked" for it! Jack (Go1ndr)

On a windows pc, there are 2 vendor.xml files that require deletion prior to updating a legacy blackberry to a "leaked" OS.
One is within: c:\\program files (x86)\common files\research in motion\apploader\vendor.xml
Two is within: c\\users\(your user name)\appdata\roaming\research in motion
There is an easier way though. Just search the entire c drive, including "all hidden files and folders" - for "vendor.xml", and then just delete the 2 files found in the results. Once deleted, update your phone using bb desktop manager.-------------------------------------

Man, when pb os 2.1 is released, the only thing we wont be able to do with a bridged or otherwise "connected" playbook is make phone calls from it. Off topic, but i just realised i can pretty much just carry my bb around as a modem and only use it for the odd phone call i might have to make. This is completely unrelated to this thread, but because i'm using my playbook right now, i just thought it would be cool to post right now, lol...
I cant wait for bb10 on this this playbook!
Another side note - rim should just build a phone playbook for shaq, he'd be able to use the playbook as a phone, considering he's a giant. LoL, peace-------------------------------------

Buckwylder--thanks, that is exactly what I did--search and deleted, then updated and all is well. Just wondered why on the PC it still showed a vendor.xml file but couldn't find the location. No biggie and thanks!

This is completely false information for one reason, on a LEAKED OS(not delivered by a carrier) the vendor files are blank(open one up sometime, they open fine in notepad), and therefore do not need to be deleted. Technically they are not blank, but the vendor codes are all 0's.
If an OS is an official OS from a carrier that is not yours is when the vendor file(s) need to be deleted. We all know there are 2 vendor files now and sometimes both need to be deleted, although I have yet to need to delete the second on any OS since the launch of the 9810 and I have tried them all.
There are other vendor files on your PC that have nothing to do with RIM or your blackberry OS.Cell Phone History:Motorola Bag phone > Motorola Star Tac gen1 > Motorola Star Tac gen 2 > Motorola Razr > BlackBerry Pearl(8110) > Iphone gen1 > BlackBerry Curve(8310 Red) > BlackBerry Torch(9800 Black) > BlackBerry Torch II(9810 Gunmetal Silver) > BlackBerry Bold 9900) > BlackBerry Z10(STL100-3 Black)

Thanks once again Homer1475 and for your constant good advice to these forums!! I actually did just that--opened up a vendor file on the netbook that I sync to, (not the PC that is the main desktop and where I downloaded the update to) and there was nothing in the files other than zeros. That's what made me question whether or not I needed to delete those files as well as the ones prior to downloading the OS to my desktop. Everything is working fine and hopefully I'll be able to help other OP's on these forums with all the good info on here. Thanks again and have a great day! Go1ndr

The other bit of partially false information about the vendor.xml file is this...on Windows XP and Vista machines, when you are loading an "official" OS from another carrier, there is only one vendor.xml file. From what I have read on the forums, it seems that those on Windows 7 machines discover a second vendor.xml file. Since I run XP at work and Vista at home, I have never had the issue.

Hey Newcollector, yes, on W7 there are two. I did a search on my Windows start button and came up with these two (as posted above) and deleted from there:
c:\\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader
and:
c
ocuments and Settings\users\(your user name)\appdata\roaming\research in motion\Blackberry\Loader.xml
OR MAYBE
C:\Documents and Settings\(name)\Application Data\Research In motion\ BlackBerry\Loader XML
May look different depending on Windows version. Best way is to do a search for Vendor.xml and delete what is there.
Also as mentioned, there were other vendor files on there that had nothing to do with BB--like for instance "QuickBoooks" which has a vendor file attached to it. - 05-08-2012, 03:01 PM

PS: Wait a second!!!! Now this is odd!!! after posting the last post--I when on a search of my desktop C drive and noticed that under the following thread/trail this file is still there (that I deleted:
Local Disk (C)->Users\MyName\AppData\Roaming\Research in Motion\Blackberry\LoaderXml
and it was put on around the same time I deleted the other two and downloaded/installed my new Mobilicity 7.1 update???? This leads me to belief that it reinstalled it with perhaps the Mobilicity info?? I opened it with not pad and under 9810 is this the thread it listed-- but don't see anything re Mobilicity or ATT
"!-- 9810 --> <os model="9810" radio="CDMA-GPRS-WLAN" series="Jennings" Colour="True" Theme="Normal" JVMLevel="1.0" Camera="True" VideoRecorder="True" VoiceNotes="True" pttApp="True" Memory="Large" KeyboardType="Virtual480x640" Sound="Tunes8700g" SystemSize="normal" Bluetooth="True" MMS="True" GPS="True" ThemeSupport="Enhanced" VAD="True" JPN_Input="True" WLAN="True" UMA="True" VPN="True" MTP="True" WebKit="True" ITUT="False">0x0C001804</os>"
OK guys, any ideas and should I delete this new one!!!!!???? Thanks!

Delete ALL instances of the vendor.xml file on the computer. You don't need them for anything.

It appears to be actually a "device".xml file not a vendor.xml file so may need to keep it. Thank you!
