Default Torch 9810 vs Bold 9900

Has anyone had any experience with both the 9810 and the 9900? How do they compare to each other with speed, software etc. I have the 9900 in black but really like the look of the 9810 in white. Considering a change of device. Any info is much appreciated.

Sean, FWIW I have both and in the same colors.

I like each one for different reasons, and that's probably not going to help you decide.

The 9900 is first off, most obviously not a slider. Some people just don't like the slider but if you think you'd appreciate the ability to choose between the touch screen and the keypad, and have a bigger screen, the 9810 is the way to go.

Speed-wise, I find the 9900 faster. The more apps I load on my 9810, the slower it seems to get (lag between clicking on app and it opening). This doesn't seem to happen to me on my 9900 with the exact same set of apps. Also, I have added a 32GB SD card to each phone, although I don't record videos, mostly just take pics.

And as you know, the fact that the 9900's keypad is better (larger) than all other phones could sway you in that direction. The 9810's keypad is smaller, and especially if you have a case on both the cover and back of the phone you could find it difficult to type on the top row of letters (particularly T,Y in my experience).

I love the look of both phones in white. When the keys are lit up they look beautiful.

Hope this helps. Ask more questions! And hopefully others will chime in here too.

    So hard to decide ha.

I love the keyboard on the 9900 and that is pretty much the only thing stopping me from moving to the 9810. I love the look of the slider with the larger screen etc. I'm also thinking that the "Bold" style BB10's keyboard is going to be a step down from the 9900 as it is meant to be a straight keyboard (like the Porshe) rather than curved. Going from the 9810 keyboard to that might not hurt as much as going from the 9900 ha.

Your right about them both looking amazing when lit up. Thank you for your reply

    My pleasure, Sean.

Good luck with your decision, you can't go wrong with either phone, IMHO.

    Cheers.

I love my 9810, but I wish they had made it as wide as the 9900. People who take a slider do so knowing their phones will be thicker and heavier, but I'm not into the phone anorexia trend. Not that I find the keyboard is too small, but gripping the phone while typing feels a little weird because it's not wide enough.

I agree that a good chunky phone isn't a bad thing. My 9000 was chunky and that was amazing. I know what you mean about not being wide enough to grip though. I used to get sore hands while typing on the 9780. I think I'm gonna try pick one up second hand and just switch between that and the 9900 until BB10 next year

I was on the fence when I bought mine. It was the 9810 vs the 9900. Quite honestly, there is no reason other than the larger screen that swayed my towards the 9810. That, and I really LOVE the slider. I didn't care for it too much when I first experienced it with my 9800, but it definitely grows on you.

The autofocus on the 9810 works perfectly, good enough in fact that when I take pictures from the back of my helicopter in-flight, the shutter speed is fast enough to capture one of the rotor blades. The attached picture was taken yesterday with my 9810 set on Auto. You can almost make out the stenciling on the rotor blade that is spinning at about 840 rpm

Default Torch 9810 vs Bold 9900

One of the reasons I really enjoy my 9930 is because of the feel of the phone. The ability to type on it is awesome! The width and thinness fits perfectly in the hands and typing is so comfortable with the size of each key and the positioning of the fingers. After typing on a 9900/30, all other keyboards seem small..

Also I think the Torch has a top heavy feel to it.. since it's a slider.. But I think for BB10, that will work to the new software's advantage since they are taking away the trackpad and the 4 front buttons.. It makes more sense to have a hidden keybaord to keep the classy look of the phone. I think the unibody keybaord style won't look right with no buttons or trackpad with only a keybaord.. It makes the keybaord look likE it's something extra and is almost just a waste of space...

I haven't used a Torch 9810 for long periods of time so maybe that phone takes some time to get used to..

Software wise between the 9810 and the 9900/30 is about the same. I think the 9900/30 might be a bit faster due to the screen size.

I personally like the 9900/30 due to the efficiency and feel to the phone and just the overall authenticity of a True Phone! I just feel the 9900/30 is best for mobile use with how efficiently it operates.

I think they have the same total resolution, just in different orientations. The 9900 is 640x480 and the 9810 is 480x640. If the 9810 is slower, maybe it is because the OS is always checking for phone orientation and keyboard position, in order to know what to display.

I have the 9810 and I wish the keyboard was a little bigger but you kind of get use to it. but it does get bogged down if you have too much stuff loaded on there i had a 16bg micro sd card and since upgraded to the 32gb ultra which helped with the lagging issues. But in all I think both are great phones i guess it just comes down to what feels good to you.

I use both devices and when I'm on one of them, I'm always wanting to use the other. The 9810 was my first slider and the biggest touchscreen I've ever used, so I'm more comfortabel using the Bold. The onscreen keyboard on the Torch is not as good as an iOS device. It looks as nice, but the autocorrect is just not as good as on my iPod touch, and of course, the one on the PlayBook is just awesome, and I wish it were on my Torch. The actual keyboard on the 9810 is great after you get used to it not being the size or depth of the one on the Bold.

I really like the camera on the 9810 better though, and having the bigger screen is better for web browsing and watching YouTube stuff, which I rarely do anyways. I especially love the browser on the 9810. Hardware wise, internally everything is the same on both the 9900 and the 9810, but the added screen for web browsing makes it just as good as my iPod touch. One thing I don't like on the 9810 is how the back battery cover thing creaks a little, but I think this is probably because I take it on and off so often as I have to get to my sim card when I switch devices.

9810 actually if I am not mistaken has slightly better battery life... that's been my experience anyways in comparison to friends who carry the 9900. Despite the batteries being the same size, I think it may just be the lack of NFC in the Torch that lets the battery last a wee bit longer... maybe it's something else altogether.

Other minor notes, if you like that the trackpad has that little glow around it on the 9900, don't switch over as the 9810's trackpad does not have that illuminated glow around it in low light. Camera on the 9810 while being the same resolution as the 9900 is of better quality thanks to the increased thickness of the device and the available autofocus. The internals (save for lack of NFC) are identical on both devices, however I can understand the 9810 being slightly slower than the 9900 because with the 9810 being a slider, it has to calculate whether or not the slider is open / closed, and then whether the phone is in portrait or in landscape if the slider is closed. Minor things that you would think shouldn't matter, but it can cause those few little milliseconds of delay.

Me, I went with the 9810 just because of the slightly better battery life... plus I really liked the option of typing on the screen to make messaging a wee bit quieter in some situations.

Default Torch 9810 vs Bold 9900

I've had the 9810 for a year now and it feels pretty natural. I don't type out long emails on it very often, but the keyboard is good enough for shorter messages. I tried a friend's 9900 briefly and couldn't get used to the smaller screen size. Although the keyboard is amazing, I didn't find it was enough to offset the smaller screen and lack of autofocus camera. I do a lot of websurfing, twitter browsing and picture taking so I have absolutely no regrets about my decision.
It all depends on your priorities of use.

This question comes up frequently and every time I am at a loss for a straight answer. They are both really nice phones period. As listed above it just depends an an individuals needs or preferences. My wife has the Bold and I have the Torch and neither of us can quickly get used to each others keyboards. For me the major factor is the screen, just plain easier on the eyes.

9810 is the perfect size for using the touch screen when you have the phone closed. Not as much with the 9930 i had. When you need to pump out an email - then you slide it open and use the keyboard. It is pretty great. Ironically, the different 9810's have varying keyboard qualifties. for some reason the white ones have always seemed to be better.

I've had both. I now have the 9900. I do miss the camera though, and yes I must agree that the battery life on the 9810 is much better, imo.
But, having now used the 99, I found the torch not wide enough like others have stated. After typing on the 99 keyboard, I tried going back to the torch, but just couldn't do it. It felt cramped and the device too narrow. I loved it when I first got it. But now must say prefer the 9900 even with the crappy camera...and I carry a spare battery where before I didn't have too. Oh well.

9900 camera pisses me off no end. It does nothing right. Torch has a very bad memory leak, Andy's review was spot on. Same apps and phone runs dead slow by end of day. 9900 is consistently faster to me.

I have used both devices and I stuck with the 9900. But like many others have said the camera is terrible, IMO, on the 9900.

I used to have the 9700 and loved the camera. Honestly RIM, why did you change the whole 'auto' focus thing?
