Problems with 7.0 to 7.1 upgrade
I have been trying to run the update to 7.1 on my 9810 today and have had a rather major problem with it. It gets to 10% and goes no further. If I do a battery pull (which I have done about 7 times today) phone reboots then jumps back in to doing the upgrade, goes to 10% again and no further. Desktop software doesn't even get a chance to launch before the update kicks in and I am at a loss to know how to stop it so I can at least try and do a backup before the upgrade takes over. Help please!

Hi Sarah--which carrier are you with? What upgrade are you trying to install and is it a carrier upgrade or a leak? If it's your carrier "Official" upgrade and it shows on your BB Desktop software, that should be no issues.
[U]Note: If and only if its a "leak or an official upgrade from some other carrier you would like to use, you will need to first delete the "Vendor.xml" files from your PC. To do so, it's best to do a search on your PC (Start button>search> type in: Vendor.xml --and hit enter. It will find the two files that are on your PC and then delete them and also remove from the recycle bin. Once that is done, reboot your computer and then download the leak or other carrier OS. After download is complete it should show on your DM. If you can provide us with these answers, one of us can help you.
Good luck!

Trying a sneaky way round the problem of the upgrade running when the phone reboots... connected to desktop software without the battery so it doesn't get the chance to kick-in! So far it is upgrading to a higher version of 7 than I had so it's a start... baby steps lol

Thanks go1ndr, I'm on Virgin Mobile. It is only reading around today that I have learnt that the carier needs to approve the upgrade or it won't work with my card. Damn BB sent me the message saying the upgrade was available and I just followed the link. I am suspecting part of the problem is space on my phone. It was trying to do the backup of the data to the device itself so when I have tried to run it again, it is trying to do it with less space to save to as part of the space I had made has been taken up with the aborted backup files... it's another theory but it kinda makes sense.

Hi Sarah@74, welcome to the forums! Blackberry wouldn't send out an OS upgrade, it would come from the carrier and show on your Desktop Manager. Also, it doesn't require additional space to speak of as it automatically does a back up and then deletes the old OS prior to installing the new one.
When you hook the phone up to DM you can click on upgrade on left hand side under Device and it will look for any upgrade that is available. As I'm not sure what country you are in, so I can't tell you what's available on your carrier but 7.1.378 and 7.1.391 seems to be the two that are the most stable. .378 is from Mobilicity (I currently use it) and .391 is from Rogers Wireless. I can send you the link for the .378 upgrade if you would like it. - 07-10-2012, 03:15 PM

Here's a screenshot of the email, definitely from BB and came to the email I have registered for my BB account. Have it running again and BB protect saved all my data up to a couple of days ago so not lost too much thankfully. I'm in the UK.

Sorry--misuderstanding on my part. I hope that this one works for you. If not or you have issues, you can try the .378 from Mobilcitiy. I'm on AT&T but they never upgraded so like many on here, I deleted the vendor files and upgraded a version from another carrier, in this case Mobilicity. I'm not sure if the Virgin upgrade is .4xx or .3xx but hopefuly it will work great for you. There is light years difference between the 7.0 and 7.1 versions. Good luck and keep us posted!

Purely for geek purposes, the version I am running now is 7.0 Bundle 2406 v7.0.0.585 Platform 7.0.0.734). I would imagine when Virgin Mobile get their into gear they will release 7.1... well I hope they do anyway. Battery life is a bit lousy and Virgin wanted me to send it back to them to test - with no offer of a spare phone whilst it is away for 2 weeks and there is no way I can be without my BB for 2 weeks!

Ok, now I understand! LOL-Upgrade immediately to 7.1.378 (most stable and without any issues--much faster browser program as well as some neat little tools, like a battery analyzer.
If you haven't downloaded another carriers OS before, there is no issues with doing it other than once you delete the vendor.xml files which Virgin and all carriers put on the phones, you won't get any further notices regarding upgrades, which are useless anyway. If you want to do it, here is the link and my instructions for it. It takes about 20-30 mins but is well worth it. Most of your apps will still be there and if they aren't, you can go to AppWorld/YourWorld, under unintalled, and reinstall them. The steps are as follows:
Go1ndr’s Download Instructions for new Official or leaked OS on BB Smartphones
Step 1: Backups
Plug in your BB device to PC, start DM, do a complete backup, check individual 3rd party apps for settings—if you have them; backup to the SD card or PC folder, and save if available.
Step 2: The OS download and Install
Step3: Delete “vendor.xml files” from PC (use search on Start menu) then reboot PC!
Step 4: Download new OS to your PC and install click “run or open”.
Step 5: Loading the OS
There are 2 ways to load the OS. You can load using “Desktop Manager” or “Loader.exe” found in the AppLoader folder at: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research in Motion\Apploader. The Desktop Manager is the easiest and a no-brainer to use. DM actually uses the Loader.exe file but does it automatically without you being aware.
If you use loader.exe, then you will be presented with options on what to load such as languages, apps, etc. The next screen gives you the option to backup your device which you should do in both cases. Never too many backups! DM backs up and restores everything and it is the easiest to use and usually flawless. Both offer the option to Back up and you should do it.
Step 6: Once installed, click on Update and let it do its thing! If it doesn’t recognize the new OS, REBOOT your PC and it will. It takes about 20-30 minutes to upgrade, so be patient. Once it’s completed, and the OS is loaded you will need to input app registration codes (where needed) and restore any settings that were saved to your SD card or PC.
Step 7: Do a couple of physical battery pulls and you should be good to go. You will be required to reset your email addresses, which is nothing more than going to setup/email and clicking on the highlighted account(s) and it will do the reset for you. You may have to reinstall some 3rd party apps and remember that some may not work with 7.1 that worked with 7.0 or 6.0—new OS’s sometimes require developers to rebuild their apps to work with the new OS.
Hope this works and if I missed anything, someone jump in and add or correct my instructions. Good Luck and keep us posted.

Thanks! - 07-18-2012, 09:27 AM #11
Hi go1ndr,
I managed to get 7.1.0.378 installed based on your instructions. I can't believe that it worked (this my first post btw) and I am happy. There were a couple of problems with your instructions that threw me for a loop. Note that I may be using a new version of DM or something too which might make a difference. I would change them as such:
step1: Directly go to the Blackberry download site and go to the carrier and version you want. (In this case Mobilicity 7.1.0.378. Also in this case there are two versions. One contains all languages plus Japanese - larger file. The other contains all languages minus Japanese - smaller file.). Select the version that you want to download and answer all the questions asked. The file is a .exe.
step2: Once the .exe is downloaded to your machine (pc) move it to the desktop for easy access. Double click it and run it. This will place all of the new files on your computer in the Research In Motion AppLoader directory (as stated in your in instructions)
step3: Delete all versions of vendor.xml. There should be two versions in the directories stated in your directory. NOTE: Do not re-boot your machine after doing this because these files will come back and bite you if you reboot and run DM (some program is regenerating these files on reboot).
step4: Immediately run DM (checking twice that those vendor.xml files are gone) and connect your beloved 9810. The Desktop Manager will immediately tell you what your current version is and that there is a new version. It will state that it is 7.1.0.378 and give you the option to install it.
step5: DM will also give you the option to back everything up. DO THIS and don't fool around. This will take quite awhile - probably over 30 minutes or so. In my case, I did not have to reboot anything. I did not have to pop the battery on my 9810 or anything. Everything just worked. One exception is that you will have to provide your blackberry id and password. Everything else, emails, apps, saved wi-fi spots, everything is maintained. You will have to go through some minor setup when you re-start some apps (for example when I fired up Cineplex to check movies playing locally - it requested if I wanted to provide a location or have it determine where I was - etc, but my Opera mini maintained all it's info which was cool).
Final Notes: When the installation completed, DM displayed a message telling me that the FM radio on my 9810 was now running. I did not know that there was an FM receiver on the 9810 so I do not know if it is a bug or something. I don't even know how to test or verify.
Anyway, thanks for helping me. I am new to crack berry. Wind Mobile is new and getting better but they are very slow getting the 7.1 stuff for the torch out. I must say that the torch feels brand new with this upgrade. I was just afraid of screwing up but went for it when I saw your post.
