Question OS 7.1.xxx - carriers please explain?

Hello people. I've had a Blackberry for 5 years now and I just bought my 3rd one today. It's a 9810. So I went through switch device, right, but I did it with my contacts and messages only. So everything went well with the switch but then when I started getting messages on my new device, I noticed it kept on telling me that the device memory is full and I should delete some text messages. I read up on this issue and I believe transferring messages from pre-OS7.x devices to OS7.x devices is not possbile. (Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm a noob. )) Anyway, I figured I just have to sacrifice having my old messages. But now, I'm hoping that with this OS 7.1.0.569 update, the issue i mention could be/is resolved already.

Also, I have no idea why all these official releases come from carriers? I mean why from VIVO? Isnt BB OS developed by RIM? Is it safe for me to get this OS even though I did not get my device from VIVO? I really wanna get this OS cause I've been following this thread and it seems that it offers better functionality than its predecessors.

    Thanks.

I can't point exactly at the answer for your questions, but I can tell you that pre OS7 text messages can be ported to a new OS7 device, as I did from my Storm 9550 to my new Bold 9900 a couple of days ago. So the problem is surely somewhere else.

And about updates, all updates are indeed developped by RIM, but they need to pass those to telecom companies as the link to your phone usually pass by a BlackBerry Internet Service, a server hosted by the mobile company. That's where they control what you can and can not do with your BB (internet, BBM, locked features, etc.).

So even is you did not get the device from VIVO, if you are currently connected with this mobile company, they will manage what updates you can have. If that's your case, it is absolutely normal and safe to download the update from them.

First of all, thank you for replying. I posted a similar question in another thread and nobody bothered answering it. Anyway, I just want to say that I did a quick Google on the migrating text messages problem and it seems that other 9810 users experience it as well. So it MUST be the device. I hope I'm wrong though.

Hmm.. I don't think I quite get all of that. So even if I did not get my 9810 from VIVO, if I do update it with OS 7.1.569 from VIVO, my device will still support it and this is true for all OS 7.x.xxx updates?

I've successfully transferred all my emails, sms messages, and mms messages to my 9810 from my old 9700 running os6. Perhaps u should try again if you care for them that much. Don't overdo it tho since all those messages add up and eat up memory.

The safest thing to do is to use whatever OS is officially released by your carrier since its approved for use on their devices and will support their features. If your feeling more bold you can try some of the official releases for other carriers but you usually have to make modifications before the BB will allow them to be installed. And for the more daring you can try beta and leaked OS's, I've tried a few and I personally don't recommend them since their too unstable.

May I ask which OS are you using? I've done it twice already(OS 7.1.0.267) with no success. I'm sure I can do fine without those messages, however it will be more convenient for me if I had all my messages in one device as I need to go back through some every so often. And thanks for the info about the updates. I think I shall I try the latest one just to see the difference.

7.0.0.583 is what I had on the phone from when I switched. Now I use and 7.1.0.391.

Try this: Backup the old BB using desktop manager. Then, connect the new BB to desktop manager click Device -> Restore. Select the backup file you just made, click 'Select device data and settings' check 'Messages' for email, 'MMS Messages' for pics and video texts and 'SMS Messages' for texts. Then hit the restore button. Using this method I've restored messages that were 3 years old from a BB that ran OS5.

    Best of luck.

That is EXACTLY the process I went though. My 9810 kept on saying that my memory is fully and I should delete some messages. I find it hard to believe that a 9810 can't accommodate the same number of messages a Curve Gemini can. Hmmmm... I think I'll give it a go again first thing in the morning. Thanks, mate.

OP, there are known issues with the newest release of the BB Destop Manager (Software as they call it now), and if you are using this new 7.0 xx DM, I can't help you.
Most of us have stayed with the older but reliable 6.0 Desktop software which has no issues.
2nd, if I were in your place, I'd delete the vendor.xml files at once and upgrade to 7.1.378 OS from Mobilicity from .267. It is an official upgrade and one of only two upgraded OS's (the other is .391) that have no mic issues and work flawlessly. You will be thrilled with this version of 7.1. Besides the much better battery life, there are a lot of useful tools (like a battery anaylizer, etc) and access to the new and (currently) free"hotspot" feature. Those of us that have been using 7.1.378 since it came out in May, are thrilled with it--it is light years ahead of the 7.0 OS versions and much better than .267. Just make sure that ALL "vendor.xml" files are deleted prior to install. Use the "Search" on the memu button on your PC to find and delete these carrier files--then and only then, install the new downloaded OS.
Once you have this new version on, you should be able to backup all of your data, including 3rd party apps, etc with no issues. Good luck and if you need the link, any of us here can can re-post it.
BTW, most official upgrades are clean with no or only minor issues. Leaks are just that, leaks that haven't become "official" yet but no difference than official upgrades. Hybrids like Mecca builds on here are also good and state of art, feature wise, but in the Beta mode and not completely issue free until they are finished with them. Good luck with your phone!

Thanks for the reply, go1ndr. I've been trying to figure out how to the OS update by how you talked about it. I started by trying to get BB DM 6.0 but I can't find a working mirror anywhere(tried looking for a working link here in Crackberry, but nada. Tried Googling but nada, all are BB DS 7.0 now) Care to hook me up?

Also, I've decided to get 7.1.378 as you have suggested and I am in the process of learning how to do it correctly. So, I figured I have to delete the vendor.xml files, download the OS 7.1.378, back up, update, restore, and I'm good to go, right? First time to do this so I'm kinda making sure.

That sequence isn't quite correct. Being new, I can see how you got there. But let's look at the sequence.

    1) Download .378 executable to PC.
    2) Run the executable to install the OS on your PC, so that it's ready to go on your phone.
    3) Delete the vendor.xml files, so that your phone isn't installing for another carrier.
    4) (optional) If you have 3rd party apps installed from sources other than AppWorld, you might want to back up your apps with something like BBSAK.
    5) Just to be safe, you might want to back up your BBM contacts in BBM.
    6) Whether you install via Apploader or DM, it should automatically back up the rest of your settings, contacts, etc., as you upgrade. Restoration should also be an automatic part of the process.
    7) If you backed up your apps with BBSAK, restore those from there. You will need to manually input any registration info.
    8) BBM is it's own animal. BBM contacts should restore OK. But groups have restored some of the time, haven't other times. If you're in any groups, make sure you have one of the admins as a BBM contact. If the group doesn't come back, you can have them reinvite you. Better safe than have no way to easily get back in.

How many Text Message do you have saved? There is a known bug in the latest OS that if you have more than 5,000 text messages stored, you will get that memory full error message. I searched and found this.

KB28736-When receiving an SMS message error "BlackBerry message memory is full! Please delete some SMS messages." is displayed

I ran into this one when our daughter upgraded to a 9900. Messages were fine on the 9700, but this occurs on the newer OS. Love the resolution - lower the number of messages to below 4999.

The carrier release the build. you can actually install OS versions from other carriers which is sometimes really helpful with fixing bugs..
RIM developing the core, providing the carriers information/workers/guidance..
But carrier is who connects you to the network and thier support and everthing is very important.. the carrier is the one that sells the device.

Thanks for jumping in Kraski-sorry feeterhorn, but I was off line all weekend--that said you got the instructions from one of the gurus here and I'm glad that it went well. If you don't notice any marked difference and all is well, be thankful. Remember at all times, that it is a phone first and mini computer second. Do a couple of battery pulls and you should be very satified. One of the main differnces you will notice is the "free" hotspot feature-at least free for now. This feature isn't on the other versions (may be on .391, not sure) and for the time being is free from Mobilicity.

As for the new DM--Kraski is correct, it is an animal in and of its own and I know there have been a lot of issues with it and especially with syncing with outlook and BB Travel problems while using it. In the end, it is a backup and restore program and nothing more, so you would think that RIM would be able to release a version without issues. I'm sorry I can't help you with this version but others on here certainly can. Good luck and enjoy .378.
