9 hours in. Battery @ 69% -- drain is 3.46%/hour with fairly low usage. I installed the SugarSync app, which wants to stay open in the background (if you close it, then you have to re-sync the folders). I'll decide throughout the rest of the evening if it's draining too much for my liking; if so, I'll kill it and just re-sync everything when I want to.
Update: 11 hours in. Battery @ 66% -- drain is 3.13%/hour. SugarSync apparently having almost no impact, other than in those hours during which it is actively syncing over the WiFi connection. Once all files are current, it safely runs in the background without draining the battery in any noticeable/egregious way.
I'll probably update one more time before I hit the sack, but I'm nearly ready to call this build a win, and that's after being about ready to nuke it just 2 days ago.Last edited by jeremycrews; 06-11-2012 at 11:45 PM.

What new features/fixes?
So after reading all the posts in this thread it's still not clear what new features or fixes this release provides. What is the advantage of installing the OS versus keeping the previous version?
Thank you - 06-12-2012, 01:37 AM #55
No idea, but perhaps someone else will be more knowledgeable. I only installed it because, for some reason, the 7.1.xx.342 build I upgraded to a week or so before lacked the battery save mode option for some reason.

I'm actually on a hybrid of this OS, but what I can tell about its performance is:
1: battery performance is excellent from initial install - mostly due to the way I recharge. Even under heavy usage, this OS is giving its best.
2: I'm using a different set of browser files from another OS, so I can't tell what .428's browser is like...I've not experienced slow rendering of sites that I visit. When it hits me, I'll do an HTML5test.com just to see the results
3: bluetooth signal acquisition is wonderful!!! Pairing from reboot and broken connections due to distance, is instant. Feels like bluetooth range is increased also.
4: wifi signal loss...IMO is hard to properly diagnosis, because everyone uses a different router. I'm on AT&T, at home, and while I've had intermittent signal loss on previous OS's, .428's is strong. Again, results will vary. If you want some hard numbers, visit mobilespeedtest.com, and go thru the speed drills. I suggest this site to anyone that msgs me, complaining about connection and speed issues. This is a great way to also know if your service provider is supplying the data speeds they claim.
5: While base .402 gave me the "muted" mic issue, the hybrid Gamma Prime - using .402's radio (sfi/os) file - has not. On .428 hybrid I'm running now, I've also not experienced the muting issue. Not saying it won't eventual happen, but it hasn't happened yet. Signal drops are none at this point; I've not experienced any dropped calls
One thing I'd like to make note of, for those that complain about how an OS performs and battery life. How you use your phone plays the largest role in how it performs. Next is apps, and last is a faulty OS.
You can NOT have 4 or more instant messaging apps, over 1000 contacts, texting 90 percent of the day, making call after call in the name of socializing, and expect a devices battery to last. That's illogical and unreasonable. Blame the user
You can NOT add random apps, in the name of convenience, for the sake of having a new app. Just like a home computer, shuffling, rewriting and overwriting happens when you add/delete any application/program to ANY device. A program/app can and WILL lose contact/communication with parts of itself during an install or removal process. Why does it happen?? It just does. Why do people have heart attacks? They just happen. Instead of adding app after app, LEARN the device you have. You'd be VERY surprised to find that your Berry already has the ability to send Voice Msgs by text or BBM, and it's built in from the factory. You'd be shocked to know that - for the 9810 model - there's a built in Slider Locking app. It's been there since 7.1 went live. Why add what's already built in? Blame the user
Am I saying an OS can't be bad... I'm not saying that at all. What I'm saying is HUMAN ERROR is built into every OS, App, and Device, and when it gets into your hands, should you choose not to understand to the best of your ability how your phone works, guess what...
Blame the user.

Well said Mecca. I totally agree with the comments. It's really easy to blame an OS for issues and not be the one to admit to making a mistake. Yeah, there will always be exceptions to the rule(s). But, if an OS is really bad, more than a few will mention it and that's if it is ever leaked or released.

The slider lock feature that's native in 7.1 isn't the same thing as the app I had been using previously. Locking the device any time the physical keyboard is hidden is beyond useless to anybody who wants to use their touch-screen most of the time. I only very rarely open my Torch, having even trained myself to use the crappy on-screen keyboard most of the time (I have a suspicion that physical keyboards are largely on their way out).
The Slider Lock app made it so the phone locked whenever it went dark, and the user had to swipe the little slider from left to right on the touchscreen to unlock it (basically, like an iPhone). It was very convenient for keeping people unfamiliar with the device from accidentally activating the camera or voice-dialing when they picked it up to hand it to you, etc.
Anyway, it was a battery-hog, so it's gone now, but I will miss it.Torch 9810 - OS 7.1.0.428 (Telstra) - AT&T

It may be a very long while before the physical keyboard becomes obsolete on a BB. It's not only a Berry's signature, it's still waaaaay more efficient than full touch. We have the best of both worlds, with our model phone - 99xx performance, and a few pluses that no other model has.
I'm glad to know a fellow 9810 user is enjoying their device as much as the rest of us - with a few exceptions, that some of us here will make known
. And I wasn't taking a shot at you with my "Slider" comment, it was just one of the apps I've seen mentioned in the threads lately and I'm like "here goes another useless app"

My 9810 has been off-charge now for a full 12 hours, and my battery is still reading 82%. Mind you, this is with a ridiculously small amount of usage (today was a very light day), just a smattering of texts sent and received and checking the time periodically, but I'm still comparatively happy with the level of performance I'm now getting with this OS build.
The Device Analyzer is calling my battery drain 1.48%/hr, so, based on the % remaining, that seems pretty accurate (and nothing akin to the completely off-the-wall readings I was getting before). It really does take a few days to settle-in nicely, so, to anyone who installs it, my advice is to just ride-out any wonkiness you might initially experience.Torch 9810 - OS 7.1.0.428 (Telstra) - AT&T

I use my Torch 9810 with my Playbook and Tether the Internet to the PB. I do have AT&T with Tethering plan.
Currently I run 402 and with that I can not get an IP address when tethering from PB. With previous released I could.
Has anyone tried that with this new 428 release?_________________________

I had no problem tethering my Playbook to my phone on .402, and no problem with .428 either.
Just turn on Mobile Hotspot on your phone and then go to WiFi on your Playbook and your phone will be listed as "Blackberry Mobile Hotspot XXXX". Not sure why you need the IP address to use Mobile Hotspot.
Or you can also go to Internet Tethering on your Playbook and your device should just be listed there (make sure that Bluetooth is turned on).Last edited by tsells; 06-13-2012 at 08:40 PM.

With 402 I use the internet tethering it connects but hangs showing. ”waiting for IP address" it never did that before.
I just upgraded to 428 and now the tethering works. More messages appear about when and how to use the hot spot. I do have the tethering plan with AT&T.Last edited by jgrobertson; 06-15-2012 at 12:17 AM.

I'm on AT&T and everything is fine except Mobile Hotspot works, it even retains the SSID but when I want to turn it off it hangs and stays on loop shutting down and also hangs the WiFi. I will try to find wch cods are responsible and inject them to see if it resolves the issue.

Thought I'd try it for a few days:

No mic issues. From the head MOFO in charge:
"BlackBerry has acknowledged how important the U.S. market will be to its turnaround efforts. "You got to win here to win everywhere else," BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins told the AP. "That's just the way it is."
