network mode problem at&t os 7.1
I got my phone through Ebay, and its AT&T 9810 unlocked
after I update to 7.1 os, the network mode is not available anymore
is there anyway to fix this issue ? like use another os carrier
btw, I don't use At&T SIM - 07-06-2012, 11:08 PM #2
The same thing just happened to me. I bought a 9860 on ebay and it was from at&t. I'm with bell in Canada. Called RIM and they have no idea how to fix it. Until 5 days ago it was the best phone I ever had. I think we got ripped off.
*I think we need an article on CB about this. This could be a big issue for many people !!! *Last edited by chm985; 07-06-2012 at 11:12 PM.

I do not have an AT&T phone and I am not on the AT&T network. What you guys are seeing would appear to be unique to AT&T phones even if thet are not connected to the AT&T network. Please can someone confirm that this is true.
For now, I shall assume this to be the case. There are only two ways that an AT&T phone can be made to work differently from other phones on other networks. One of these we may eliminate immediately. This is Service Books. Since it is not AT&T sending these they will not affect an AT&T phone.
The other is to ask what gets loaded at OS install time. This is defined by two things.
- The phone model. In this case it's a 9810.
- The VendorId of the phone. Type <Alt><LeftShoft>H to see this. The VendorId is defined at manufacture and cannot be changed and each carrier has an unique number. This allows RIM and carriers to identify their phones at OS install and other times.
Carriers can load apps, themes, ringtones and specific .cod files at OS install time based upon the VendorId. I found a file in the Java folder called
net_rim_hotspotclient_att.cod and I wonder if this may not be affecting the hotspot and maybe other network parameters. There is no other file called net_rim_hotspotclient that I can find.
I suggest a trial removal of this file by using CrackUtil http://forums.crackberry.com/f35/crackutil-85617/ or BBSAK to remove this file. If you use CrackUtil, please make sure that you read the specific instructions in my first CrackUtil post for installing under Windows 7.
The removed file will be placed in the CrackUtil folder so you can easily put it back.
I have NO IDEA what will happen here. - 07-07-2012, 12:20 PM

the file net_rim_hotspotclient also show up in 7.0 os, so I think it will not fix the problem
, there is two files ,net_rim_bb_manage_connections and net_rim_bb_manage_connections_lib
I guess that at&t modified them.
is it possible that I loud the two files of 7.0 os into 7.1 os ? - 07-07-2012, 01:19 PM #7
I don't know. I have never played with hybrid OSs. It is also possible that the contend of the cod files has been changed. It is worth a try to remove the file I suggested and see what happens. Likewise, try switching the files you suggested. Just make sure that you have a fully working OS available - even if it is not installed to get you out of trouble if this all goes wrong. Oh yes, please do a BackUp of your data BEFORE you start.

My suggestion is to reload the latest official release for the phone, which for ATT is 7.0.0.583 and see if the problem goes away.

This is an AT&T problem and not the phone. AT&T want everyone to use 3G/4G. They want to disconnect their old 2G and maybe even 3G equipment. They can save a lot of money by not having to maintain the old stuff and gain a load of rack and computer space in the process. This is why, I think they have removed the older/slower network options.

My opinion is that 7.1 is not yet fully supported by ATT (and maybe never will be), and perhaps that's why the 2G option isn't there. Everyone on here with an ATT 9810 with 7.1 got it by taking another carrier's 7.1 and deleting the vendor files. I guess us ATT folks will have to choose which is better. Personally, I still like Rogers 7.1 since the battery life is better and there is less lag. So I don't get to choose when I want to stay in EDGE, oh well... I suspect if your in a place that only has EDGE the phone will still enter into it.

I agree with all your comments... except... that AT&T will choose which is better.... no way am I waiting on them to decide, that's up to us and Mobilicity 7.1 (378) is our best bet on AT&T at this time.
And yes, I can confirm it will switch to EDGE when necessary.
I was concerned too about not having the option to choose as I live on the 4G fringe zone but I have found .391 to be very efficient at choosing the network. BTW... battery life does not seem to suffer... I'm able to get 2 full days without a recharge while constantly going in and out of 4G coverage. I can't confirm this but this build does not seem to make the device 'hunt' and drain the battery. It just uses what ever is available. I'm happy!
