Long term reliabilty slider?
Hi,
I now have the Torch 9810 and I just want to ask about the long term reliability of the slider. Mine does wiggle when closed and clacks a very little when using the on screen keyboard. I expected that as the 9800 was slightly worse and regardless it is a moving part that will have some play in it. But what I am worried about is will this hold up for 12 months? I really don't want it to break one day!
What are you thoughts on the slider?
Thanks! - 05-25-2012, 02:50 PM #2
I don't think it will be an issue. Mine seems to be very sturdy and I've had it since it came out in Oct/ 2011. I had my 9800 for a couple of years prior to that and never a problem, even with dropping it, etc. Shouldn't be an issue for you.

I have had mine since early November of 2011 and have had zero problems. As you can see by my signature, I had the 9800 before the 9810. If the slight wiggle bothers you, then I would suggest you buy the AGF GRT Endo or Ballistic case. Takes care of both clacking and wiggle. I bought the Ballistic and love it. I did this since I broke two Seidio Innocase Surface cases. The top piece tabs would break and the top piece would always come off if I dropped my phone. I have dropped my phone twice with the Ballistic on and have not had the top piece fly off and the result is no damage to the phone or the case.

Thanks for your replies! I can live with the wiggle and slight clacking but I hope it doesn't get any worse in the future. Its good to hear that others who have had this phone for a long time haven't experienced any problems with the slider.
I remember my 9800 was worse so I hope this doesn't go the same way! - 05-25-2012, 03:40 PM #5

I did a Web search to find it. Got it for around $27. I would have gotten it from CrackBerry, but I don't think they had any at the time I was looking.

A little wiggle is expected as its a mechanism with the moving parts. Here in India, its very hard to find those branded cases mentioned here so I'm using OEM leather pouch. Though OEM, its quality is horrible... But I'm still living dangerously with it cause its a good protection to the phone

Anyways, try not to drop your phone often.. That's what I'm doing to avoid any trouble
Take care

I've had mine since release and think the Torch is great in durability. Mine has taken one or two big falls and the slider is notably looser and is evident when I use the virtual keyboard, but I'm not concerned about the functionality or durability of the device. It still feels solid and seems ready for more. I'm certain that your's will be just fine.

I've had no issues with my oem case, I heard all of the horror stories and still went for it. Its been crushed, bent, sat upon and its still going strong
Mine has a bit of a wiggle since I tried removing the battery cover, but still works fine.
moral of the story, pray to god you don't have to do a battery pull xD - 05-26-2012, 01:51 PM

Thanks for all your replies! Yes the slider does feel more solid than loose. I just hope that it will hold up.
The one thing I hate most isn't the wiggle but the tapping/clacking noise that was really bad on my old 9800 and on this it is slightly better but really annoying. - 05-26-2012, 09:06 PM #11

Hmm... NicoBerry... Have you checked up where that clanking noise coming from ?? I have checked up on mine but there is no sound from the slider while typing on the screen. I have a 9800 battery cover and its little loose so sometimes it makes irritating little creacking noise when I'm typing on both keyboards. I have tried original silver cover which fits perfectly and makes no sound at all. But I can live with that sound than the horrible slippery silver back cover.

Check out your battery cover if its making that noise. - 05-27-2012, 01:07 AM #13

My 9800 and 9810 have both been ok so far. I've had them since they were released. Just FYI, battery pulls are not necessary if you push the alt on left side and control (the one that does caps) on the right side as well as delete....In that order. It acts exactly like a battery pull

I agree! That is a very good and useful way of rebooting the phone!
I may try sticking 3/4 pieces of strong electrical tape on the back of the slider to try to stop that awful clicking the screen makes whenever I use the virtual keyboard.
Has anyone tried that? Does it work? And more importantly - does it damage the phone in the long term?
Thanks! - 05-27-2012, 07:00 AM #18
I wouldn't use tape. I know, I know...duct tape fixes everything
I am not sure what you mean by it clicking when you use the virtual keyboard? I abuse the keyboard myself. The virtual one drives me nuts....it's whatever u get use to. The Bold spoiled me.

What I mean is when I use the virtual keyboard, I can hear a clacking noise when I am typing. It is most noticable when using the virtual keyboard in landscape.
I think I just need to accept these things are bound to happen on a slider device! And to hope that they don't get any worse or break! I ordered from Amazon so it will be a real pain to get this repaired if it breaks.
It was worse on my 9800 but this isn't far behind. I would buy the GRT Endo case but it isn't sold in my country. - 05-27-2012, 11:49 AM #20
Does your phone had nasty drops ?? I have had big problems than wiggle and clanking sounds on my Nokia 6265 when it had couple of very nasty drops on the road... It gave up on me within 6 months.. The slider was not working properly... and I was forced to use handsfree cause mic gave up on second drop.
I was very much skeptical about going for slider phone again only because of that horrible experience but 9810 proved to be pretty solid device. - 05-27-2012, 03:10 PM

No this phone is less than a week old! But seeing other sliders (Both my 9800 and others on youtube) I should count myself lucky!
I may try the tape fix! - 05-28-2012, 02:25 AM #22
I had my first Torch from the model's release until Jan. 2012 with no hardware issues aside from minor paint chipping along the left/right touchscreen borders. When the BB10 models are released I'll definitely be watching out for the newest version of the Torch slider.
As for the clicking you are experiencing while typing has your Torch's upper half ever taken a hit while it was open? A hit while in that position might cause some extra free play or cause creaking during use above and beyond normal wear and tear. Just wondering..

No, my Torch hasn't been hit or dropped whilst open. This is the strange part! When it is open, it is 99.9% solid but as soon as I close it, there is some wiggle and the annoying tapping of the touch screen.

I bought the 9800 when it first released, and used the heck out of it until this march when I upgraded to the 9810.
The slider is reliable. I had this phone in my pocket during jumps, field time at both -20 degrees and 105 degrees. Sent 100's of texts a day, emails and always used the physical keyboard. Used it on runs for the endomondo app, had it in the gym using the calendar app to get my workout off of for the day.
Despite all the dirt, cold, hot, running, chalk covered hands, and use, never had an issue with the slider.
The 9810 is getting the same beating, and keeping up. The 9810's slider seems alot better than the 9800. The slider is very reliable. - 05-28-2012, 10:33 AM

Wow! You certainly used your Torch to the max! But does yours wobble/clack? As if after all that it had a solid slider, then I'm really worried about mine!
