jvm error 517 software upgrade?
It all started two fridays ago. my 9810 froze and I removed the battery like always. I replaced it and the bar went accross the bottom then the screen turned white and reads jvm error 517. Then it cuts off and repeats it again. And again. And again. I used my upgrade and ordered a refurbished 9810. Two days after I got it the same thing happened. Went to att to swap it and they said I needed to upgrade the software. Which you would think would already be on the phone since it was new. They said it could be from the apps I got to change the color of the led light since the error msg appeared when I removed the battery for the first time since installing the apps. So apparently I have to upgrade online. I'm just not sure which software to use. I don't know much about all this. Please help!!

Try following the directions from this BB 101 for fixing a bricked phone:

i also had to re install os. i asked att to connect me to rim. i refused a refurbished phone. rim guided me in re installing the os using desktop manager. i did it with the battery removed for the beginning of the re install. they wrote up the steps for me and helped me for over one month making sure everthing was ok. i will try and write up the steps for you. the key is do not put back all the apps. you have some apps causing this. otherwise it can happen again.

here are the steps required to perform the battery out reload of the device software emailed to me by rim tech help. 1. open bb desktop software 2. remove the battery from your bb phone 3. connect the bb phone to the computer without the battery 4. the bb desktop software will give you the error msg bb desktop software cannot communicate with the connected device 5. click on update. the bb desktop software will check for available bb device software. note: if the bb phone has a password a prompt will appear to enter it at this point. 6. enter an email address or uncheck the option for email when new versions are available 7. click install update 8. a popup will display that states that when complete the device will need to be activated with the wireless network. without disconnecting the device from the computer, put the battery back into the device and click ok. note: if you miss the opportunity to put the battery in the bb phone at the appropriate stage and the upgrade fails click "retry". if it continues to fail please start the process over again. note: once the upgrade is complete your bb phone will probably take 20 to 30 minutes to restart. this is normal behavior. 9. a msg will appear stating your software update is complete 10. click close. if you need further assistance feel free to contact rim.

Thanks....my cousins 13 year old son did it for me on both. Used the same software but diff things showed up on each phone. The app that caused it was still there so I deleted that. Everything looks good so far....keeping my fingers crossed though.

Thanks tapioka! I was able to revive by bricked 9900 today, and it seems I even got an upgrade to OS 7.1 as a bonus

One thing, though, is that I had to modify your instruction by putting the battery in again much earlier in the process - otherwise, the whole thing kept crashing a the 'Reconnecting to JVM' stage. But with the battery in at this stage, the update went on until the happy and satisfying end. - 10-02-2012, 12:40 PM #9
glad i could help. these instructions to install without a battery to correct 507, 505, 517 errors were written by a rim tech before 7.1 was released for desktop software and before 7.1 694 was released by att. so there could be changes

This perplexing accroding to my info if a JVM 517 error appears it is the result of the phone file system being corrupt. Also this error may also indicate a hardware issue. Thus error 517 can be either a software issue or hardware and reload of the Os may not delete the jvm error totally and is likely to reappear or kick other jvm error like JVM 529,528,545.
Usually new phones a immediatley replaced if this error occurs becuase chances are that device memory is faulty.
Or is it now found that with this error it is vital the battery is removed before starting os download while with other jvm errors its not essential to remove before battery first be reloading the Os. - 10-02-2012, 06:07 PM #11
I spoke to a tech cellphone repair shop, he said in the case of JVM 517 error he loads os without battery but first wipes the phone in with a software that gives now JVM 543 error then loads the os with battery out.
What the software is he wouldn't say. How far this true I'm not sure but says he hasn't had come backs.
