Ideally, you're probably correct. But, at least with AT&T, that doesn't work as planned.

I'm close to two months shy of having my 9810 for a year. Since I've moved on to 7.1 builds, I can't vouch that AT&T hasn't had any upgrades to 7.0.0.261. But they haven't had a single 7.1 release. Why wouldn't we want to upgrade on our own?

Then there's my experience with AT&T approved upgrades. And my experience is verified by comments by others, here. AT&T's upgrades for my 9800 (before I got the 9810) were always "interesting". Infrequent, often the worst possible upgrades, lots of bloatware. Not my first choice when I can upgrade on my own.

Every AT&T upgrade I've done has been like any other -- download, install to PC, install from PC to phone. The only step missing is the need to delete the vendor files, which you don't need to do, anyway, unless the release is carrier specific & from a carrier other than your own.

I wasn;t referring to any specific carrier - they are a law unto themselves. My post was referring to the the fact that there is an OTA facility within the phone to upgrade an OS.

At least you are with a carrier. My 9810 is SIM/carrier free so nobody upgrades me.. Ahhh . I am doomed to using leaks for all time

Since I've been solely with AT&T, I can't say if OTA works well for other carriers or not. And maybe it's where I live, but OTA never really gets going for me. Which I've discovered to be a blessing. If I have to install via PC, then I have some control over what goes on my phone. So, both of us are in the same spot for different reasons and enjoying the benefits.

Sounds that way does it not ?

In fact I'd heard this before about AT&T. I live some of the year in Charlotte NC and my son, who lives there full time, is on AT&T and he too has a 9810. I tried to do an OTA OS upgrade last month when I was there. Needless to say, it did not work.

i am with att. had to install 7.0 583 with desktop manager. my phone kept saying it was up to date when it wasn't. rim and att told me 583 would not install ota. also that it is better anyway to always install using desktop manager. also i found att tries its hardest to steer you away from blackberry. am always asked why in the world did i want blackberry not i phone. i had to insist i want blackberry and that i prefer 9810 to 9900. they also push you to exchange the phone for any problem rather than re install os. i had to insist on it and insist on being connected to rim for tech advice.

I had desktop manager 6 and had the same problem . I updated to 7 today and it saw the update. Installing now!!. If you already have 7 try deleting it and reinstalling it. It was clearly the problem for me.

It did that twice on two computers. Did not fix the problem. However, I did discover that I had to have "SYSTEM” as a user under Security in Properties. Not sure if that fixes the problem however.

Tried that and also moving up to 7.1 beta. Neither made a difference. See the earlier posts referring to CCleaner. That recommendation fixed my problem. Whether it's an software uninstall issue or my own error in uninstalling previous versions, cleaning the PC registry of any left over entries fixed my problem.
