Default ATT new Dsktop, can't install 7.1 OS on 9810 anymore

I have successfully installed several 7.1 versions on my 9810 with AT&T. I discovered that the 428, I have on there now has the broken mic problem. I went to downgrade to an earlier version that I had one there earlier. ( I run on W7 64 bit)

THEN: When I started the BB Desktop it automatically installed an update to version 7.0.0.59 Rel May 17, 2012. NOW it will only let me install one the original 7.0 versions from AT&T.

I have tried everything I can think of but no go. I tried installing from Loader.exe, starting it and desktop "as administrator." Tried different versions of 7.1. I uninstalled the 7.1 and reinstalled. I deleted the vendor.xml. Nothing worked. So unless I get this fixed the phone is a brick.

    Help please.

Just for the heck of it, do another "complete search" for any vendor.xml file on your PC using your "start" button. I deleted the two we all know about but later found 2 more that perhaps an earlier version of an AT&T download left on on my pc.
Once this is done if in fact you have more on there, then re-download the version you like/want (btw, .378 is flawless with no mic or any other issues) and it should be good to go. You also might want to click on "Update" under device options on DM and try and delete the versions shown. Just an idea and I hope it works for you or someone else has a fix. Good luck.

From Desktop Manager 4.7 and up DM would go to the Internet and download what it thought was best. How kind.

I only use DM for Backup and Sync operations these days. For anything else I use Loader.exe. This is a RIM program and it is installed when you install DM.

Loader is located at C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader\Loader.exe

Many people on Crackberry use Loader exclusively for OS upgrade and all their app install and uninstall needs.

Loader will not try to "help" you. It will just do what you tell it and no more.

I tried Loader.exe. It only shows the current installed OS. Does not show any others. It only shows the current OS if I run it "as administrator" BTW.

That is because only the current OS is on your phone. Loader only works with OSs on your hard disk. Then it will install the latest valid version to your phone.

You need to download an OS from RIM, your carrier or wherever and install it on your phone. You next need to remove BOTH copies of Vendor.xml if the OS is not from your carrier.

Many people use BB Boss which is downlaodable from here BB Boss Version 2.2 to remove Vendor.xml and to remove unwanted OS modules (shrink) from the target OS.

There are many guodes on Crackberry as to how to do this.

All normally valid suggestions, except.... I'm running into the same issue. I tried a 7.1.0.402 hybrid and .428. Both had the muted mike problem. So, I uninstalled all the OSes on my PC and reinstalled 7.1.0.284 (removing all vendor files). Then I wiped the phone and hooked it up, expecting it would install .284. No such luck. It did an OTA install of 7.0.0.358. DM, BBSAK and Loader all refuse to recognize any OSes installed on my hard drive. If anyone has a solution, I'm ready for it.

Uninstall all the phone OS's. Download ccleaner CCleaner - PC Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download and run both the cleaner and reg cleaner, save a copy of the reg. Reboot, install the OS you want to put on the phone. Make sure hidden files and folders are checked for searching, search for vendor.xml, should be 2, one in program...... x86 or program...... for 32 bit. The other will be in user........ delete them both. Go to loader and run it. You might want to see if pieces of that hybrid are hanging around also.

When I got my 9810 off ebay, I tried to install OS7.1. It would not load. I knew I was doung everything right. After all, I have done this a few times before.

I tried and tried and it just would not load. At this time I knew nothing about this phone. I went all over the options and removed a non-existent IT Policy. Still nothing.

Finally I took a deep breath and bricked the damn thing back to JVM 507 (no OS on the phone). Now, could I get my new phone to ever work again.

I connected it to my PC and ran Loader. Amazing, it loaded immediately. Since then I have upgraded my phone twice more with no issues.

I have NO IDEA why it would not wipe and load a new OS before. Maybe you guys will have to do what I did.

JL_Cmdr, CrackUtil, BBSAK or loader can all brick your phone. My experience is that this will work and you will be able to load OS7.1

I did not mention this before as I thought that my phone was an exception. Clearly not.

i was told by rim that they will guide me creating 507 error and then re installing 7.0 583 on my phone.
this is after i re installed the os with them a few weeks ago.
it is to fix that i get no warning light on low battery.
so creating 507 error can create a clean re load to fix problems.
i refused an att offer to exchange my device before trying this

Bricking a phone back to JVM 507 is quite acceptable provided the user has the software components in place that will guarantee the successful loading of the new OS. In my case I knew that this would work as I have done this many times and I know exactly what I am doing and how to recover both PC/Windows errors and problems as well as those on the phone.

For inexperienced users the above may prove a challenge.

I had done those things. I actually had 6 OS version already on my HD. This was something new. I think it has to do with the 7.0.0.59 version of Desktop SW that is intended to keep us from putting any version on that is not from the carrier.

I was able to get it installed but after hours of hoops. My post on that below.

    1. I GOT IT INSTALLED: Here is what I had to do:
    2. NOTE: I am running W7 64 bit with Java 7.5 both 32 and 64 bit versions. I also have a lot of applications.
    3. NOTE: Prior to the Desktop 7.0.0.59 upgrade I had installed about 6 OS 7.1 versions with no problems at all. Just delete the vendor file and run Desktop. Now that does not work.
    4. I moved all my Loader Files from the RIM Shared/Loader Files/ folder to a thumb drive.
    5. I uninstalled all applications from RIM.
    6. I deleted all folders with about Research In Motion.
    7. I ran PC Tools Registry Cleaner
    8. I rebooted
    9. Ran PC Tools Registry Cleaner again.
    10. Rebooted again.
    11. Downloaded the desktop and Device Manager from RIM
    12. Installed them
      • Acquired the 71.0.378 version OS
      • Installed it to the HD
      • Deleted the Vendor.xlm file
      • Tried running Loader.exe "As Administrator," no go.
      • Tried running Desktop Manager - it would not even connect to the phone.
      • Logged off
      • Logged on to an administrator account
      • Ran Desktop - it did connect to the phone.
      • Went to Update and it showed the 378 version.
      • I installed it. It worked.

      1. Then I ran the 428 version again to see if it would show up to install.
      2. NO: Back to the same old thing (either user or admin account). Only shows the original AT&T 7.0 release version.
      3. Since the original 7.0 release is not on my computer, it is getting this by going to either RIM or AT&T for the information.

    MESSAGE TO RIM:

You can not put this kind of mess into the hands of consumers. You need to understand who your customers are. This kind of mess would anger IT folks too. You need to look at the world from the eyes of your customers. Write your software for customers not for the convenience and pleasure of your programmers. Don't let your programmers use your software to show how smart they are.

I am reminded when I was a VP engineering and had a programmer tell me "if the customer is that dumb they should not buy the product." I did not fire him - right then anyway.

Thanks. That fixed it. And, no, there were no "extras" hanging around. I've done all of this before, except the reg cleaning. But, this time, something must not have deleted all the reg entries. And, now, ccleaner is staying installed, "just in case". Again, thanks.

RIM offers this service as a "get you working again" service to its customers. It should be remembered that most Blackberry users will never be in this situation. Most users have a reliable phone that works perfectly for years.

When phones fail, most users will take it to a repair shop or, buy a replacement.

What happened to you and others in this forum is a). unusual and, b). an anomalous repair scenario.

Blackberry users are not supposed to be upgrading their phones en masse. There is a very good procedure for carriers to ininstigate an OS upgrade over the the carrier's network. This, once started is completely automated and works well.

However if you have the desire and the expertise (this last is often missing, imo), you can get the latest updates from various web locations. A major user resource is CrackBerry hehe.

I am glad that your phone is again functional and that together with RIM there was a procedure that worked for you.

I too have been a senior manager with two large multi-national corporations and I too have heard comment similar to your apareapparently ex-employee. My reaction would have been as yours.

CCleaner is the best all around utility ever invented! We use it all the time on all of our business (and personal) PC/Laptops. If you are still on .378 (if I read it right) you are going to be very happy! Great upgrade and flawless! There is a link on here for the old 6.xx DM that I can dig up if you need it. Just saw it a while back. Let us know and good luck!

I'm not the one on .378. I have to look for the right thread, check out the experiences and maybe try it. Does it still allow hotspot without tethering on AT&T?

So far its still there free of charge, but to be fair, I haven't really used it. I have watched the threads carefully to see if anyone has had an issue, or the carrier has tried to stop it, and there haven't been any negative threads on this subject to this date that I've seen. I don't really have the need for the hotspot feature much but when I do, I'm certainly going to use it. In general, it is flawless with regards to mic issues, touchscreen issues, battery drain, memory drain, etc. Truly flawless in all aspects--so far! I've had it on my 9810 for about 6 weeks now.

I see that you got it, but in the future, disconnect your computer from the Internet before trying to upgrade. Works flawlessly every time (provided that you delet the vendor files).

It worked flawlessly for me, still connected, till this time. But this time, even Loader wasn't recognizing anything valid installed on the hard drive. I doubt that would have changed with a disconnect from the internet. It looks like one of the versions wasn't uninstalled to a point that the registry entries were wiped. Which confused even Loader. As soon as I fixed that, DM, Loader, and BBSAK recognized versions installed to the hard drive.

Since my OS install machine is connected to my 32" flatscreen TV for a monitor, I'd need to disconnect and move that just to get to the back of the PC to disconnect the 'net. The registry cleaning was a better solution. <grin>

I am running 378 now and so far everything is fine. It is for the Mobilicity carrier and can be downloaded from RIM. You have to delete the vendor.xml file.

I am using 378 now. hotspot, tethering, no mic problem, compass, maps, gps all working and better. The only difference is see from the 428 is that 428 was perhaps a little speedier on the touch screen scrolling. But of course, the 428 had the mic problem.

Unfortunately AT&T is not making the updates available. They are still on an early 7.0 version which had a lot of issues. It did not have the hot spot, compass, maps, gps, tethering etc. did not work right.

A lot of employees have these old Blackberries that their employer provided and have not updated. Compared to the new generation smart phnes, it is almost embarrassing to have an old BB. My doctor apologized when he pulled out a 9700 saying he had to take it so his daughter could have a new iphone. I pointed out is was a very powerful device. He had no idea of what it could do.

I was in an AT&T store about a week ago and was told that they recommend to NOT buy Blackberry. Similarly I heard the same thing in a local Best Buy Kiosk yesterday at the local mall. This OS 7 interim strategy for RIM is not working out. They really needed to get the 10 out last fall. That would of required a much faster product development process than they seem to be able to pull off.

Still if the 10 is on a par with (or better than) the Galexy SIII they have a chance of regaining some mind share in the US. From what I hear it just may be.

Good luck.
