It is my understanding that the at&t & t-mobile networks are similar, but that same phone won't work on the verizon network.

AT&T and T-mobile are GSM networks. Verizon and Sprint are CDMA networks. You cannot use a GSM phone on a CDMA network. Also, you cannot use a CDMA phone on a GSM network unless it is a world phone and has a sim card slot. So to answer your question, no you can't use a 9810 on Verizon.

^THIS. You can't use a GSM phone (AT&T/T-Mobile phone) on a CDMA network (Verizon/Sprint).

I think, by now, you have it pretty clear that you can't. If that makes you consider switching to AT&T or T-Mobile, there's a whole other thing to consider. While basic phone functions work the same on both, the data frequencies are different. So, unless you are on the right US carrier or one of the international carriers, you will still lose data functionality. which makes your 9810 smartphone no better than a feature phone if it's on the wrong network.
