First off talk to ATT and make sure you have a tether option in your data plan. Will not work otherwise.

Then Options>Network>Hotspot. Should be easy once the tethering plan is activated.

1) Do you have OS 7.1.0.258 or higher installed on your phone? Only OS7.1 has the hotspot feature and version .258 seems to be the first full version of 7.1 where it just turns on and works.

2) There's truth in what sedalia066 says. If you have .258, it won't ask about a tethering plan. And, if your use stays close to what your norm is or you only use it rarely, you may get away without a tethering problem. But, if you start creeping up in regular data use or have noticeable usage spikes, you can be sure that AT&T's system will note it and send you a message that you need a tethering plan.

Yes it is safe, these releases are still designed by RIM, they just are not released by your carrier yet.

Turn off your internet connection on your computer until the update is started.

1) With the phone not connected, go to uninstall programs on your PC.
2) Uninstall all BB OS versions.
3) Install ,258 again.
4) Delete vendor file(s).
5) Connect phone.
6) Bring up DM.
7) Wait till phone is recognized.
8) Wait a little longer till DM says there's an upgrade OS.
9) Install to phone.

In that order. OR:

1) With the phone not connected, go to uninstall programs on your PC.
2) Uninstall all BB OS versions.
3) Install ,258 again.
4) Delete vendor file(s).
5) Connect phone.
6) Go to folder where Apploader was installed.
7) Run Loader.exe to install to phone.

Again, in that order.

I've only owned a 9800 and a 9810. Either set of steps has worked every time. What OS version is on your phone, now?

using version 7.0.0.583. I know AT&T will never put the hotspot version out so I want to be able to do this and get it working.
Thanks

I'm at a loss. Maybe try an earlier version of 7.1, .190 or .205, and see if one of those works. If so, upgrade from one of those? Or try a different USB port and/or different cable?

Yep. Experiencing the exact same issue. My AT&T 9810 goes through the entire 7.1 download process flawlessly, or so it seems. Still no 7.1.0.258, just the same old version as was previously downloaded, 7.0.0.583.

I have an AT&T 9810 and had no problem upgrading to the leaked 7.1.0.258. I use the AppLoader method because it has been flawless for me so far.

1. Download the OS update to your PC (don't click run, click "save" and save it to your desktop)
2. Once downloaded, install the OS to the computer by double clicking on the download icon.
3. If computer has XP, click computer>C drive>Program Files>common Files>Research in Motion>AppLoader.
4. On a non-carrier approved OS update (your carrier or any other carrier) you do not need to delete the vendor.xml file. If it is another carrier's approved OS, then you do need to delete the vendor.xml file.
5. Plug in your device.
6. Click the loader icon in the AppLoader file to install the OS to your phone.

This will always work. If it doesn't, is your phone on BES? If so, that might be the problem?
