I am content with the basic 9800 theme, including the notifications bar, but want to disable the notifications list that appears when the notifications bar is selected. In other words, yes to notification icons, but no to messages, calendar entries, etc. popping up when the notifications bar is selected.

Is there a suitable theme that someone could recommend?

None that I know of. On OS6 I just never used the notification bar due to it having too much lag. It's much better on OS7. So you want it to be there for the purpose of the notification icons, but really want nothing to happen when you tap on it?
