Track Pad Cursor moves around by it's self!!!
Hey guys, got a serious issue with my 9800, I was sitting here and watch the cursor dance all over my screen on it’s own like someone is hacking me but of course I know their not. What I believe is happening is the Trackpad is scrolling to the left and up. For example if I place the cursor in some text form an email it will move to the left and up on it’s own until it reaches the top of the screen.
Also, I can her the audible roll clicking like a mad man all by it’s self. I have no idea why it’s doing it and trying to send or write an email while the cursor is freaking out it impossible. I have tried the following...
Turn Trackpad sensitivity to 20 / 20
Turn Screen sensitivity to 4 with hover @300.
I have experimented all the way down from the stock levels. Still does it, actually it’s doing it right now! Ughhhh...
Anybody? - 10-21-2010, 01:19 PM #3
I guess a fly could be crawling over the trackpad, huh?

i had this happen to my 9700, it was only happening in the lunch room under the lights, it would move all over the place, so it could also be the light sensor.

Mine does it randomly and intermittently... I called Rogers Support, they had me do an advanced OS reinstall... Said that would fix it. Hour later it's doing it again. Can't type cause the cursor moves all over the place. Mainly Left and up, until it tops out. Then the audible tap sounds like a machine gun.
They agreed to send me a new one. So just waiting for it to arrive. I will post a follow up once I am up and running again.
Otherwise I love this phone!!!

hi arioch...mine is doing the EXACT same thing as yours (cursor only moves left and up)...I am also with Rogers. However, this is my replacement phone. What tech support keeps saying to me is that my back up file could be corrupt. I reinstalled the OS, and they are saying to use my phone without any information on it for 24 hours. Did you do the same thing? I am hoping that it is the phone and not my back up file! aarrrrg!!!
I also love the phone too!

I finally got a new one after my trip. They couriered me the "NEW" one not a repaired one. Make sure you insist you get a "NEW" unit. The problem got so bad that I couldn't type on it. Again this was a random thing, not sure if it was the ambient lighting in the room or the battery that caused the issues.
One work around is a trusty piece of masking tape over the trackpad. At least I could type on the unit with out it adding wingdings or garbley goop. When typing it would look like this... The tape worked like a dream, but obviously not acceptable.
So, I also did an advanced re-install twice, did not help. Rogers was very good. One thing I can suggest is be polite, and if you get a ****** bag support person, simply call back and try again. Some of them make notes some don't. Play the game and continue until you get a phone that works.
My new phone is great. Had some early lag issues but it's running perfect now.
Good Luck and go get some masking tape! LOL - 11-24-2010, 01:23 PM #9
I have called numerous times, and they keep telling me, "sounds to me like a software issue" install each component of the restore file 1 by 1....what I am afraid of is that the file is corrupt and getting a new phone isn't going to solve the issue. Did you use the same backup file to restore the new phone they sent you?

Total BS man. It's clearly a hardware issue. Have you tried the masking tape trick over the trackpad. Bet you it stops doing it right?
So it's clearly a HARDWARE issue. Something to do with the sensor in the track pad it's self.
I am on my second phone. Same back up files used to deploy the new phone and no issues what so ever. I did an advanced reinstall like 4 times with Rogers and they finally deemed the unit defective.
It's a rare buy known issue. Keep trying.
Good Luck - 11-26-2010, 09:40 AM #11
OMG...I just tried regular scotch tape and it worked! Thanks for the tip...oh I'm going to give Rogers a mouthful...I actually had an older file (From August) and I installed it and the cursor did the same thing right away. This is what happens when they replace our BRAND new phones with Refurbished ones.

Yeah make sure you don't get a refurb... They can give you a "NEW" one. Also, like I said, being polite and telling them a brutal hear wrenching sob story usually helps! LOL
Never tried "Scotch" tape, only tried masking. Glad to hear it works.

Mine just started doing the cursor/scroll up yesterday and I'm pissed. Trying to move around and especially type emails has been a challenge. I've found that if I lock the screen and run my thumb left and right press a little hard on the Call/Blackberry/Trackpad/ESC/End Call buttons it'll work for a while. The only thing I've installed was a new theme on Tuesday and an update to HTC Revolution theme. Definitely think its hardware related but oh the pain of having to get a new device!!
And I work in IT!

I got my torch 2 weeks ago and it started do the scrolling, and I just assumed it was me hitting the trackpad since I was coming from the 8130. Then I realized it was only happening in the evening were it was dark. I think it has to do with light affecting the tackpad because I put some window tint on it and it has not done it since.

Has anyone tried replacing the trackpad?

Guys...it's the blackberry that has the problem...I had an unrelated issue with my first BB, Rogers gladly replaced my phone, unfortunately with a defective phone. When I installed my software on the phone the cursor started going apesh!t! I phoned and tech support kept telling me it was a software issue. Thanks to Arioch and this thread I tried what he suggested. He/She suggested maskin tape, I just put regular tape over the trackpad and it worked perfectly....software issue my a$$! They sent me another phone, I installled the same software and it works just fine! There is definitely something wrong with the trackpad, NOT your software. If it is still under warranty, get your service provider to replace it or get it repaired...GOOD LUCK!

My wife's phone just started doing this. Super annoying. I have tried adjusting settings, and a security wipe ... no dice.
I'm sure its a hardware problem. Will have to get the trackpad replaced for $50 - 10-17-2011, 12:36 AM #21

This happened to me once, seems that if I was close to the fluorescent lights at work, that was what triggered it for me. Must be the flicker from the tubes.

Hi EVERYBODY
I bought a new 9860 few days back and on the very first day the Cursor starts acting like it has a brain of its own. I thought that the trackpad must be sensitive so I used the phone for few days only to realize that it is difficult to type a message or an email as the cursor would drag the whole conversation to the top on its own. Even when scrolling down Contact list, the cursor would just push the list to the top.
I am based in India (Delhi) and had a tough time even trying to connect with the service center and I wonder if this issue can be resolved well within this phone or will it be replaced. Any suggestion from you guys would be highly appreciated.
Thank you much for the time to read this. I welcome all inputs, thank you !
