I spend a few hours with the Rogers UMA tech and came to the conclusion that I had to change my D-Link DIR-625 settings to "802.11g only" and the WPA mode to "WPA2 Only", instead of "auto (WPA or WPA2)"
Apparently the N signal doesn't work well yet with the Torch.
I haven't lost the UMA signal since. (I had a Curve 8900 and that one turned UMA as soon as it smelled the signal.)

There is a help section in Crackberry I think that provides tips on getting wifi working which helped me troubleshoot getting UMA working. The 9800 works great on UMA on Rogers and Talkspot is a big saving on air/LD.

maybe i'm a bit slow on the learning curve (coming from 3 Blackberrys and 10 yrs at Tmo) but is UMA a Tmo exclusive thing? I have an older Blackberry now on ATT and i can connect to Wifi but i never seem to get UMA. is that why?

UMA is not exclusive to T-Mobile (USA). CinnBell and Southwestern Bell also support UMA.
UMA requires the carrier to maintain a seperate set of servers to manage the IP traffic, AT&T does not.
