Torch won't connect/login on wifi hotspot

Help please ! I'm travelling with my Torch 9800 and I can't seem to get my phone to connect to the free wifi. I've got my data at OFF while Roaming - have WIFI preferred set up and WIFI 'on' in Manage Connections. I've got the WIFI showing as connected but when I go into my browser I get the message "Data Services are disabled. Go to Mobile Network to enable".
I can't seem to get connected to the 'login' for the wifi network - but my daughter's bold and my husband's curve both went directly to the login when they connected to wifi network.
When I click on the network it says that I am connected, but I know that I need to sign in to this network so I know I am not really connected. (besides the fact that I can't browse of course).
Any suggestions?? Thanks
