Torch: Slide Closed will not go to landscape
Hi
I recently ran into this annoying problem with my Torch. When I slide open to use the physical keyboard and then slide it back closed, it will no longer go to landscape mode when I turn it 90˚ nor is the virtual keyboard accessible.
When I try to write a message the option to use the virtual keyboard is grayed out as well. I tried the options<keyboard<slider close virtual keyboard and nothing.
I've done the soft reset to no avail. When I pull the battery it works again however when I slide open the phone and slide back closed the problem re-occurs. I've even gone as far as wiping the OS and reinstalling the OS and that does not alleviate the problem.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

What OS are you running on your Torch? I'm on 246 and I just tried recreating your problem with no success.

Thanks for the reply, I also am using 246. I had also updated the firmware via wireless lastnight which if I recall was 349 (don't remember) and the same thing.
That's when I decided to wipe it and to reset it back to v6.0.0.246 platform 6.4.0.105 and it still has not rectify the problem. - 11-23-2010, 04:24 PM

I'm assuming this never has happened to anyone?

Not that I have seen here on CB. Have you changed any typing or keyboard settings. If you have done a true wipe, everything should be at default. The tilt issue I cannot speak to other tan to say some 3rd party apps like 6 tools and QL have "tilt lock" features.
As for the virtual keyboard, I did have one get corrupt. Anytime I hit "p" for example "q" would also get selected. Wipes and fresh installs did not correct the issue so I returned that device. Do you have any other languages installed by any chance?

i had the same issue.
for me, it turned out to be a hardware problem. if i pressed firmly on the bottom of the phone (below where the trackpad is), it would recognize that the phone was closed, and the onscreen keyboard would work again.
essentially, the slider never registered it was closed.
i had to have that phone replaced. - 04-30-2012, 12:26 PM #7
Work around worked for me
Thanks for this tip. Pressing near the Blackberry menu key works for me. I have read elsewhere that slamming the slider open and closed a few times fixes whatever is stuck, but that did not work for me and I don't like slamming expensive equipment.

Late reply here, but I've just experienced the same issue, and it looks like it's not registering closed. I have to gently slightly open the slider and close it again, after which it recognizes the close.
As well, it appears my slider is a bit loose. Wiggling somewhat...
I'm not planning on replacing anything, as I'm gonna let it just die and then head back over to Android. I do love the phone's hardware, but software wise, apps are just lacking in my region, and in the App World in general. I also miss native email via WiFi only. - 07-31-2012, 04:53 AM #9
definately a hardware problem. Mine was replaced under warranty for exactly the same fault. It's the sensor that picks up the orientation of the phone that's failed. It gets progressively worse until it won't go into landscape at all.

Additional 9800 slider symptoms: touch keyboard lockout & keyboard backlight stuck
I've had my Torch since Nov 2010, so it is well out of warranty, and my issues started happening after more than a year. I hit the BB support forums a few months back and they suggested a wipe and an OS upgrade. Neither of those suggestions fixed anything.
Suffice it to say, this thread certainly is the best resource for explaining the hardware cause, and a clever way to overcome it -- at least temporarily. Pressing near the touchpad is working for me sporadically.
I have two other symptoms that appeared about the same time the orientation problems started:
1. The touch keypad gets locked out and will not function once in portrait mode.
2. The slider keyboard backlight does not shut off even when the slider is closed.
I have nothing to offer in way of fixing these additional symptoms, just more info.
