Default Is the Torch screen made of glass?

So, I had a Storm 9530 and when I bought it, the representative told me that it was virtually unscratchable. One day I got courageous and tried to scratch it with a key. Not a single scratch or nick or anything. I have the Torch now. I DO NOT like the screen protectors one bit, so I'm going unprotected. I'm curious, and I cannot find it anywhere: Is the screen glass? Is it as durable as the Storm?

    ..............

OK, so after reading one-day's worth of responses, it looks like it's just about split: half say plastic, half say glass. Does anyone actually KNOW? To the one poster...my screen IS cold to the touch, and feels just like my Storm screen...but yeah, does anyone know for sure? If you do, where did you get the information? I don't want guesses!

I got the screen protector from wrapsol and you can't even tell there is one on it unless you look really good. It is smooth no orange peel and you don't have to spray anything on it to make it stay.

Nope, it's plastic. The LCD itself is glass of course, but it's covered woth what you actually touch -- plastic.

Feels like plastic to me. Unlike the Torch, the glass on the Storm's is cool to the touch and has a different feel/sound when I tap on the screen with my fingernail.

When I used the Torch, the screen felt like plastic. I have had many glass touchscreen devices (iPhone 3G/3GS, Droid 1, Droid X) so I know how it feels, but that really isn't an accurate way of figuring it out. Side by side though, the DX screen felt different than the Torch screen. I was also able to push in the Torch screen a little in the middle of the screen. I can't do this on any of the other devices.

Smash it. I'm sure if somebody just smashed it into a concrete sidewalk and picked up the pieces they would be able to tell if its plastic or glass... Or perhaps not. But it would still be a cool experiment

I seconded that motion... I will call RIM and ask them. If it is glass I hope it is scratch resistant glass. An AT&T associate told me that the iphone has a glass front and back and it is not scratch resistant...smh that compared to the antennae issue was my deciding factor as to not buy the iphone. Then I had to make a choice between the samsung captivate and the torch...well i bought the torch

Well if that's the case then the Torch screen is glass. They use the same screen.

They use the same LCD, but it's possible that they use a plastic digitizer in the 9800 to save weight and because it doesn't actually get pressed. I haven't touched one though, so I can't compare to my Storm.

Just because the size and resolution might be the same, doesn't mean it is the same.

I agree with that statement but I was under the impression that they're the exact same part. Some one please correct me if I am wrong.

    Hey Mikey...

I must tell you that the screens are certainly not the same. The glass/plastic screen of the Torch extends beyond the viewport (where you see images/text on the screen) by about half an inch on top and quarter inch on sides and bottom. The entire Storm screen is a viewport. Additionally, if you give the Storm a really good nice, shiny clean, you can actually see what appear to be touch receptors spaced maybe every 8th of an inch making a grid across the whole touchscreen. The Torch does not have these embedded into the glass.

Regrettably, I'm starting to think it might be plastic? If you hold it at an angle, and just in the right light, there appears to be a bevel at the intersections of the black border on all sides, where the border touches the viewport. This leads me to possibly believe that a glass screen might be adhered to a plastic cover? I'm not convinced, but this is looking like a possibility.

I really really really hope that it is glass because I do NOT like screen protectors!

Hmm.. I know exactly what you're talking about with those "touch receptors" I noticed them the first day I bought my Storm. I'm still not convinced they're different parts though. I wish we could find some documentation..

My Screen is scratching VERY easily. Deep noticible scratches. I'm actually very annoyed because these all came from my pocket. I never had issues with my Storm's screen. The Torch's screen is crap when it comes to scratches!

If the Torch had been in a holster or pouch, it would not have happened. That's what screen protectors are designed to mediate.
