The "guy that worked there" is wrong (or misinformed).

Not true. It's the hardware not software. If you search, you'll find more.

So if I get the hardware the 3g will work?

The only way you will "get the hardware" is to get a completely different device. One that is compatible with TMobile.

I'm guessing that would be expensive and not worth it?

Let me make it clearer. You cannot change the hardware in the device. You would need a completely different BlackBerry.

TMobile uses different frequencies for 3G than AT&T. You will never get 3G on TMobile using an AT&T device. Not going to happen. You need to get a device which supports the 3G bands that TMobile uses. That would be one branded to TMobile or Wind (in Canada) or a fewer smaller carriers (such as Cincinnati Bell, I believe).

What switchbeach said. If you need to have 3G, do *NOT* buy an AT&T 9800. They will work fine on EDGE (2G) but not 3G.

This is not specific to the 9800. It affects just about every AT&T phone. I have a AT&T Bold 9000 on TMO and only run EDGE.

Once again, the issue is well documented. Search is your friend.
