Default Spell checking and globe symbol

I have removed all languages except for English (UK), Español, Français and Català. I have English as the display and input language. Until recently I could switch spell check almost instantly between say English (UK) and Español simply by pulling up the virtual keyboard on screen and tapping the globe symbol to the left of the space bar. This spell check change would also cause EN in the top left-hand corner of the screen to change to ES, just what I wanted. I could also switch back immediately, in the same way, to spell-checking in English. However, I now cannot switch out of English spell checking UNLESS I change the input language to Español. This was possible before. How can I get spell check to switch rapidly between English and Español again, so that it works again as it did before?

Many thanks in advance.
