Purchase Blocked unlock?
Suggestions and guidance requested.
I am looking for a VERY inexpensive torch to bridge to my Playbook. The one possibility I found that may sell cheaply enough will not accept an unlock code. I have never rooted a phone (but have another device) and don't know if rooting it will remove this restriction. It is unknown if the phone still works (I can test with my ATT SIM) and the seller will refund payment (less shipping) if it does not function. It is worth the effort to me if I can unlock the phone but not if unlocking is no longer viable without expense.Of all the things I have lost, I think I miss my mind the most. - 07-17-2012, 09:28 PM #2
There is no such thing as "rooting" a BlackBerry phone. That only applies to Androids.
You might want to ask about unlocking in the Unlocking Forums.
There was at one time a way to unlock a device that was hardlocked (due to all 10 attempts at entering code being wrong). However, that required sending the device to a shop that did DM3 cable unlocking, and it was much more expensive. I am not sure if that option still exists.--Laura Knotek (formerly known as lak611)

Thanks Laura,
It sounds like this is not a possibility but I will check out the correct forum. It is interesting to note that there are not third party OS's for the BB. I am not really interested in obtaining a non-BB OS just a way around the locking so that I can reload a clean BB OS and not be restricted to ATT for an upcoming trip to AU.Of all the things I have lost, I think I miss my mind the most. - 07-17-2012, 09:42 PM #4
You can run any carrier's OS that is for your particular BlackBerry device (or a leak, or a hybrid), no matter what carrier you have. I rarely ran an official AT&T OS when I used BlackBerrys.
The unlocking is not related to the carrier's OS. That is a separate issue, that you can find out more about in the Unlocking forum.
I had unlocked BlackBerrys. Once it is successfully unlocked, it never gets locked again. However, if it is hardlocked, that is a different story. I got my code and entered it, and it worked after one attempt; however, I used a reputable unlocker that posts here on Crackberry, not something I got off eBay or elsewhere.--Laura Knotek (formerly known as lak611)

The phone is definitely already hardlocked which is why it may be in my price range. I could use it in the states as is since ATT is already my carrier so I still may consider buying it just to have the bridge but would really prefer to have it available for my trip. I will have WI-FI where we are staying so it is not critical for the trip but still desirable.

If it's hardlocked then it should still work with SIM cards from the same carrier (in the same country).
