It makes no sense to have this cost more than 499 without a contract. If it costs more than that I will just buy out of my contract the day after I buy it and cancel.

same thing for the iphone and the other phones when they were announced..
posting on Ebay mentions they will be available after release on aug 12...
meaning after the SELLER run to the nearest AT&T store to get the upgrade
and profit $ 400 or more per phone.
what a business oriented world we live in
It is $499 no commitment. Posted all over internet.
We've seen a lot of "speculation" about the no-commitment pricing posted. It's time to see an official link.
The reason I'm pressing on this issue is that AT&T's no-commitment price for the 9700 at launch was $749.99. It's hard to believe the 9800 will launch 9 months later at 1/3 the price. If the $499 is accurate, that's great. I just want to separate fact from speculation so that people have realistic expectations.
do upgrade eligible people still get the $50 discount to upgrade/renew for 2 years on new devices? was that available for the 9700 last year?
here is a copy/paste from my att account page.
As a valued AT&T customer, this line qualifies for discounted equipment pricing when you sign a new 2-year commitment.
We can offer you an additional discount up to $50.00 off regular 2-year commitment pricing and a waived upgrade fee on most devices. Additional discounts do not apply to iPhone.
