There's a setting, if you're using PatternLock, that will stop the lock screen from rotating. Options, Third Party Applications, PatternLock, Appearance, Screen Orientation. Hope that helps!

I just made a landscape copy of my wallpaper at 960x720 resolution so that when it is rotated it scales properly without pixelation. I didn't want to have to always unlock the pattern in portrait orientation mode only if I was using it landscape.

The dotted lines in the middle are how the portrait is rotated in patternlock even though the picture was taken in portrait mode. - 12-17-2010, 04:58 PM #5
Its not patternlock rotating images. Its the way the camera is set up in the torch. The real orientation of the camera is landscape.
Basically, when you take a picture in portrait, its not true portrait, its a picture in landscape but with the phone vertically, but it shows nicely because its the actual OS rotating the picture so it shows on the screen correctly.
Its pretty much like taking a portrait picture with a regular digital camera, you move the camera 90 degrees so its portrait and the pictures will actually have to be rotated on the computer. Same happens with the torch, when you get on the computer, the image will be rotated 90 degrees counterclockwise if it was taken in portrait. You would have to rotate it 90 degrees clockwise to have it in the right direction.
In other words, there is no direct portrait in this phone. Its just vertical landscape. Resolutionwise its landscape, all the pictures will carry a higher width than height, however, the actual image will be rotated so it looks portrait, but the dimension and orientation in which it was taken is still landscape. You can see this while browsing the pictures on the computer.
The same happened to me with patternlock, you just have to rotate the picture 90 degrees clockwise.Last edited by gbsn; 12-17-2010 at 05:25 PM.

Also, just tried taking a picture in landscape and patternlock displays the image the same way, supporting your explanation thet it saves all images as 480w 360h (its actually higher of course) no matter which direction you turn the phone.

Camera saves all pictures in landscape resolution. Taking 480x360 as example, then all pictures get saved like that (higher width than height). Even the ones taken as "portrait". The only way to get true portrait is to rotate it 90 degrees clockwise, making it 360x480. To rotate you would have to do it on a computer or with a third party app. The OS rotate function is just for looks, i dont think it can save the image in that rotation.
Basically, you want the image to be 360x480 for all portrait wallpapers, because patternlock loads the actual image file which is in landscape, and from landscape the image is actually counterclockwise but the resolution is 480x360.
If we take the fact that OS is not actually rotating pictures when showing them, i would say the native resolution of the phone is 480x360, basically, landscape. But with the accelerometer, the menus and stuff are moved to 360x480 since thats the orientation of the phone. So, the phone is in a full switch to portrait from landscape. Why? Because you are seeing the correct image when you take pictures in "potrait". Basically, the screen is in the incorrect orientation, but the phone shape and accelerometer made it the correct orientation. Its like holding a bold tilted 90 degrees, except that this phone has the keyboard in that direction, so it looks normal, while its not.
But if the OS rotates the picture when showing them, then the screen is right with full time portrait and the camera is wrong with full time landscape, so when the picture shows, its just showing a temporal image in memory rotated 90 degrees.Last edited by gbsn; 12-18-2010 at 05:12 AM.

I create wallpapers for the Torch and run into this. I have to create my wallpapers in 360x480 for them to display properly in portrait mode.
So, I think, the solution is to get the picture on the computer, rotate it the 90 degrees and save it (different name if needed). Any basic image editing program should do. Then put the new rotated one back on your phone and set it in PatternLock.
