Default Off Network - on to WiFi ??? Help

Ok, sorry if this has been approached before but I have been searching and I don't see the exact answer that I am looking for....

Facts:

Torch 9800 on the Rogers Network in Canada. Data Plan.

Travelling to the USA and have a calling plan and a texting plan but do NOT want to pay for a data roaming plan as they are too expensive.

How can I move to 100% WiFi for email?

I have done a test and successfully connect to my home WiFi account but when I turn Data Services "Off" then I cannot send or receive email.

Is there a way that I can travel to the USA and use free WiFi in the hotel for my email?

Thank you for instructions on how to do this....

If you can't use your BIS than you will have to use your browser to check your webmail. The Opera Browser is nice, tried it again today for the first time in along time and I was supprised how good it is.

Just have Data turned off unless you're in your hotel and wanting to receive/compose emails. You'll still be able to text and make phone calls when you're away from wifi.

I always thought BIS needed the carrier connection to work until I tried it myself about a week ago. I just tried now and I still get the same result. Carrier connection off wifi on for about a hour now. Received and sent 5 emails and maybe 10 BBM's. The only thing I can think of that might be different is the app world from the beta zone. It allows downloading apps with wifi. Maybe they are starting to allow BIS through wifi? I don't know.

The settings you want to use are:

Data - ON
Data While Roaming - OFF
WiFi - ON

Thanks for this... however I am still confused....

I had to also go to my Manage Connections screen and uncheck Mobile Network.

I did this - at home in Toronto - and I can send receive email. Texting however does not work in this mode?

This would convince me that I will be able to send receive email when I am in the USA at a hotspot, but I bought a texting package and that would suggest that I could not receive or send text while in this mode?

I assume that I would have to check my mobile network again in the manage connections screen?

Shouldn't have to have a degree in cell phones to do some of this stuff....

Thanks for all the responses....

Don't uncheck Mobile Network. (Nowhere in my post does it say to do that.) SMS will not work without the Mobile Network on. Now, as to whether or not you can send SMS while roaming is a matter for you to discuss with your service provider.
