I think you're wrong there. RIM knows they have to change something. Right now, after Windows 7 Series Phone was unveiled, they are basically sitting in last place as far as OS goes. RIM isn't dumb, they will adapt and change to the changing market. 2010 is going to be a good year for RIM.

OS 5.0.0.680 - 03-04-2010, 01:19 PM #32
Great points.
I personally love the Storm way of doing things, with the touch highlight, click to select method. However i love my physical keyboard more, hence me having a 9700.
To me, it would be grat to have sure press on this, but i can see space being an issue, other wise it will be a brick.
I would have no real issue if it was not touch screen either though.

IMO... The only reason there is a trackpad is for when you are using the keyboard. The screen will be so much higher than where your thumbs are for the keyboard that it would be difficult to use the touch screen. Having the trackpad allows the user to easily switch between nav using the trackpad and typing using the keyboard rather than reaching all the way up to the touch screen.

So the basis of this conclusion is because there is said to be no surepress? While I can understand that conclusion, RIM can certainly tweak the software so that way all you need to do is touch the screen rather than press it in to select something. I think surepress was something they wanted to do not needed to do because of the OS. Hey, I hope there is a new OS, but I'm not banking on it because of no surepress.
Who cares which device is better? Isn't all that matters is that it's the best one for you? - 03-04-2010, 03:43 PM #35
I really want a new OS and I like the surepress. If they could have an on/off feature for it I think that would be better.

Yes, exactly. That is the basis of my conclusion. Think about it...if we cannot highlight THEN confirm, how will the current BB OS work? We need to be able to just highlight an icon if we want to be able to use the BB menu button, right? How could they keep the same OS if they get rid of SureType? Please, indulge me!

What did I miss? When was this device said not to have sure press? Seems it should be a lot slimmer if there is no sure press. I agree that if there is touch, but no press then this has to be a new OS. But if they are that close with OS6 then either it is just a reengineered OS5, or they new OS5 was garbage before we even saw the first leak. I am thinking 6 is a rebuild of 5 and not all new from the kernel up.

Those who are expecting OS 6 to be a ground-up rewrite are going to be really disappointed. It's just not going to happen. First, the timelines mentioned don't support that and, if you're RIM, you're unlikely to throw out all your existing infrastructure, apps, and talking points. I suspect what we'll see is a slightly fresher UI and, (hopefully) some improvements in overall usability. But no radical changes. I mean, come on, the GUI designer etc. are being released soon, and if there were massive changes coming up that just wouldn't happen.
Frankly I think Palm's approach was the best. Allow apps to be developed in HTML, Javascript and CSS while allowing devs to drop down to C/C++ for libraries, games, etc.
Interestingly, while I did call out the Rogers Storm 3 image as "fake", now I'm starting to doubt that. I suspect that is was 6.0 will look like. More transparency, cleaner, but fundamentally the same. - 03-06-2010, 01:41 PM #41
It'll probably be new in a way like windows 7 is to vista. 6.0 is 5.2 afterall from what people are saying...
