Mute, Speaker Phone, Hold Buttons Issues

While I'm on a phone call, the following buttons automatically appear on the touchscreen: Mute, Hold, Speaker Phone, and Add Recipient. I have yet to complete a phone conversation without hitting one of these buttons with my cheek. I cannot for the life of me find a way in Options to stop these buttons from appearing during phone calls. Is ther a fix for this?????

The screen should turn off when you're in a call....
If not, pressing the lock button should turn the screen off?

Do you have a screen protector? If so, it's blocking the proximity sensor that deactivates the screen when held up to you ear.

My phone has started rapidly toggling Mute/Unmute on and off during a call. I know I am not touching the screen - sometimes it happens while I am looking at my phone! Makes it VERY difficult to have a conversation! I do hear the beeping that is how I know it starts happening during a call. I also do not hold the phone at the top.

Strangely enough - it doesn't happen on every call. I can hang up call the person back and most of the time it stops. I did have to pull the battery the other day to get it to stop.

Most of the time I do not put my phone in my pocket or in a holder, I carry it. I also removed the "screen saver/screen locking" program.
And my phone is about a year old.
Anyone else having this issue?
