So glad I stumbled across this before getting my torch this weekend. I will definitely be turning off the compression as soon as I get it!

Found my problem. For some reason google maps was using 90% of CPU :/
I left compression ON and all it's well now.

As if that's not enough, RIM says that compression should be kept turned on.

Same with mine. After the last update I couldn't get 8 hours out of my battery with only the 'main 5' applications running. Now under the same scenario I see a day and a half or two out of my battery. A day if I run Dropbox in the background all day.

My problem with the spinning clock started after the last update. So I tried everything in this thread with no results. At all.
Until, someone mentioned google maps. That's when I noticed that google maps was using a ton of CPU. So I had to acknowledge the terms again, then close out correctly. Problemed solved. So far.
I would suggest checking all your aps, especially the ones that use the GPS feature. If they're waiting for acknowledgment after an update, it may be like not closing out properly. It seemed to be running when it shouldn't have been.

I'll tell you how I got rid of the spinning clock. I built a pyramid out of popsicle sticks, and when there was a full moon, I put it on the kitchen table with the Torch underneath it and left it there all night. Next morning -- no more spinning clock.

I've heard of this problem (and fix) on a number of other forums, so it seems to be legit

I think they just need to release a proper update for the 9800 in NA for all carriers.

I just stumbled upon this thread, tried it, and found that it's effective for my case.
My Torch has aged with all the data it accumulated over a period of 15 months so far, and after turning compression off, it's speed is back as if it were new.
Thank you!

For me, turning off compression saved me from having get a "brain freeze" from eating all those popsicles and waiting for the next lunar cycle.

I recently having lag issues and even installed bejoose. I just happened to find this while bored and lurking around CB on my PB. Turned compression off and is MUCH more responsive. Regardless of what RIM suggests I am keeping this setting. I have tons of extra space on my phone and card so no need for me to compress the data.

Although I never suspected that this was the cause for my problems, sure enough, after I pulled it out and using the phone all day yesterday, I not once had the spinning clock, lagging, or battery drain problem (whereas it would have easily occurred over 20 times in that same duration before). I have on more "experiment" today... and that is to re-insert the micro-sd card, but to disable automatic compression. Let's see what that does... I'll keep you guys posted. | it's like a new faster phone! magic worked! thanks! |

I've been irritated by a phone that takes about 5 minutes to get started in the morning after being switched off for the night. I'm going to be fascinated to see how the phone reacts tmrw morning when I switch it on.
Is Google maps a pre-installed app? I presume it is not the maps app that sits on the ALL tab?
