- Hey, it's Milo from the PreCentral forums with a request for some help from our BlackBerry friends.
Would you please do this Real World test and post your results? If you have multiple phones, please test each phone while connected with WiFi. Times are from when you tap the icon until the app fully opens and is usable.
I will post this in several different forums so that we can get results for different phones. I hope we get results for older and newer Blackberry's as well as Palm's, iPhone's, and Android's, etc.
Real World Speed Test:
1. With no apps running, time how long it takes to open your Facebook app.
2. Close Facebook and time how long it takes to re-open Facebook.
3. Close Facebook and time how long it takes to open Google Maps.
4. Close Google Maps and time how long it takes to reopen Google Maps.
Please cut and paste this Report Score Sheet in your reply:
Real World Speed Test
1. Time to open Facebook:
2. Time to re-open Facebook:
3. Time to open Google Maps:
4. Time to re-open Google Maps:
5. Phone make and model:
6. If Overclocked, Speed:
If you would like to see the effects of rebooting, do the test then reboot your phone and repeat the test.
Basis for the test:
3G or 4G connection speeds vary by location. WiFi should be similar for everyone. Linpack, Quadrant, and others test the CPU only or the graphics system only. This is a real life test of actually opening two very popular apps available on almost every phone. Time to open email, messages, etc. vary with the number of entries and so are not used.
Thanks!
- Craig

- That is exactly it. While I want all the data I can get on any phone, I really want to get a good sampling of the new OS on the Torch.
And so far, I have to tell you, you are rocking. You are about 5 times the speed of a stock Palm Pre so far and still twice as fast as a Pre overclocked to 1.2 GHz. And the Storm is almost as fast. Wow.
Thank you to everyone who has contributed so far!
Please keep the tests coming!

I never really paid too much attention to speed, but here it is.09-29-10 11:15 PMLike 0 - So far the 624 MHz Torch is 4.3 times as fast as a 1 GHz overclocked Pre. Also so far in these tests the Torch is neck and neck with the Droid X as the fastest phone we have tested.
Congratulations CrackBerry lovers! Wow!
Please give us a few more tests if you can to help round out our numbers.
Thank you!

- Craig09-30-10 01:24 AMLike 0 - Once you get more data in and round things out a bit more do you mind posting the average times for each device? (Torch, Droid X, Pre) It's pleasing to know that the speed of the Torch is excellent and competitive with the Droid X. Processor size alone isn't everything after all =D
- Craig09-30-10 12:01 PMLike 0 - Thank you to everyone for your help!
The results show what BlackBerry owners have been saying all along.
BlackBerry's are fast!
The Torch with it's OS 6 is remarkable, easily defeating the Pre, iPhone 4, and even the EVO. Only the Epic and Droid X could keep up.
Even the 2009 BlackBerry Storm and Bold at ~600 MHz are nearly twice as fast as a 1GHz Pre.
In the real world, BlackBerry's are fast.
Here are the details...
We have gotten 49 responses with 4 tests each covering 16 different phones/speeds.
The initial opening speeds compared to the stock Pre:
Droid X: 6.9x iPhone: 3.9x EVO: 2.9x Epic: 5.0x Torch: 6.3x as fast as the stock Pre.
The initial opening speeds compared to the 1 GHz Overclocked Pre:
Droid X: 4.2x iPhone: 2.4x EVO: 1.8x Epic: 3.1x Torch: 3.9x as fast as the 1 GHz Pre.
Comparing all four tests to the stock Pre:
Droid X: 6.9x iPhone: 6.1x EVO: 4.4x Epic: 7.6x Torch: 7.3x as fast as the stock Pre.
Comparing all four tests to the 1 GHz Overclocked Pre:
Droid X: 4.1x iPhone: 3.6x EVO: 2.6x Epic: 4.5x Torch: 4.3x as fast as the 1 GHz Pre.
Other notes
These apps do not truly close on any of these phones as evidenced by the faster re-open times.
Other phones tested were 1.8 to 4.2 times the speed of the Palm Pre overclocked to 1 GHz.
