If you look at the leaked OS forum here on this site Elite1 usually posts a step by step guide to the process. While there you can download the OS as well.

I believe as long as it is an official RIM release, there are no problems. I can tell you that you can always downgrade to an official OS before turning it in for warranty work.
Here is a step by step for downloading the official RIM .448 OS. It works very well, has a faster response, cures several issues and the battery life gains tons of life time.

You can get 448 here from UK 3
    https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads...FA661ED1244039

    1. Do a backup of your device first, using Desktop Manager > Backup. Close Desktop Manager upon completion and unplug BlackBerry.

    2. Download the OS file to the PC then install it to the PC by running (double clicking) the file you downloaded.

    3. Go to c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader and delete the file named "vendor.xml."

    4. Plug in BlackBerry and double click on "Loader.exe." It's located in the same place as the above vendor.xml file was in.
You do not need to use the BB Desktop to load this OS, step 4 will get it loaded for you. Total time is about 30 minutes or so start to finish.

    enjoy the new OS.

Now you can always download a different OS. I am using the leaked .526 and so far am very happy with it. It's just that it is "unofficial" as of this date and it depends on how you feel about upgrading leaked OS. I can tell you that these leaked OS upgrade are as good as an official RIM release, (they come from RIM I believe) its just that they have not been called "official".
