Frankenstein 9800, is it possible?
I currently have a Torch on Telus still on a plan. Phone has started acting flaky camera wise, black screen and battery drain immediately when trying to use it. I am assuming a component has started going on it.
I have a possibility to buy a 9800 with a broken screen, locked to Bell but still functional otherwise. Is it realistic to swap my functional screen on the Bell unit, unlock the Bell phone and toss in my sim and have everything work without a hitch? I checked online vids so the swap doesn’t worry me. It is the Bell phone to Telus network that does.
Any gotchas and is this possible? If it was a Telus phone it would be a no brainer...
Thanks,

You need to review a few Youtube vids on disassembly and see if you wish to tackle it.
Phone should work fine. Only gotcha is the Bell phone *may* not work on 3G on Telus. Depends on the 3G freqs they use. I have an AT&T 9800 on T-Mobile. I only get EDGE. Everything else works fine.
I don't know if you'll run into it yourself. You need to check the radio frequencies they use for 3G.--

The one BIG thing to pay attention to is the screen version number. If these are not the same in both devices the device will not work. See images below to see where the version number is marked on the screen.
Note: there might be different version of LCD for Torch 9800, please check picture below to identify if your LCD is 001/111 version. If your current LCD is not the same version, then it might not work with your phone.

Not sure on the rebuilding of the screen...
But you can unlock a Bell(3G) / Rogers(2G/3G) / Telus(3G) / ATT(2G/3G) SIM Phone and use it on any 4 of those providers (a 2G Phone won't work on Bell or Telus since they didn't build 3G into their system).. The Canadian Big 3 use the same Freq for SIM Phones. The CDMA phones for Bell/Telus are stuck with the original provider.
I have tested a
9300 Bell with Telus/Koodo,
9300 Koodo with Telus/Virgin,
9800 Telus with Bell/Virgin,
9900 Virgin on Telus/Koodo,
All 3 roaming in the US default to ATT, They should work with Tmobile for Calls but no data (different freq for data)....
Unlocking is easy and free if you look in the unlocking section for the free software. Or you can support one of the Unlockers if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself (Most of them offer a reasonably priced service)The box said ‘Requires Windows Vista or better.' So I installed LINUX.
