For some reason when viewing contacts, the 2nd image - the quick message icon - is greyed out - as in I cannot select it - this happens with every single contact - running OS .246 - is this a bug or something?

That's strange - my email... icon is only grayed out for contacts that I do not have an email address for. Works fine for those who do.

Thanks for your reply - it's a quick e-mail icon? Oh I presumed it was a quick text icon - what a shame - I wish this could be edited to be quick text

To text you can either press the BB button to bring up options and choose "Text Contact Name" or you can press and hold on the phone number - within the contact - that you want to text and an options box will pop up and you can choose either to text or call that number.
