not liking the choice of battery...1300 mh?? the 9650 has a 1400 mh and it doesnt have a 3.2in touchscreen or that much processing going on under the hood...i wonder how the battery will be?

I really want to know what improvements they've done to the OS for optimization, they did write their own 3G stack which could really improve battery life,

CNET said they mentioned a focus on improving battery life...time will tell
the main issue is the screen. the pre had some battery saver focus but you can only do so much. touchscreens burn the juice, and with a small battery you can only expect so much improvements from.

That's never accurate.
You are correct... those numbers are never correct, but they can be compaired to the numbers for your currecnt device to see how it will hold up for you. Especially if you are compairing the same brand of phones.
