Default 624 Mhz processor is a joke!

Why the heck is RIM coming out with a new OS but keeping the same processor? This issue bothers me because no matter how well the OS looks, the darn phone is still slow. Its like putting new shinny RIMs on a Geo Metro and expecting to go fast. The engine is what matters! What's up with that?

I don't find the 624mhz processor to be slow. not sure what my 9000 has but it's fast enough. I have no problems.

For the way Blackberrys handle data and the OS, the processor is capable of running things smoothly. I am probably sure you know how efficient blackberrys are with data (said to be 10 to 1 ratio) to iphone for instance, then no need for a 1ghz processor.

If you watched any of the pre-release device videos by Salomondrin you'd see that it's quite snappy. Clock speed is not everything.

sigh.....i understand what the op means. 624mghz is sad, especially when some competitors are switching to dual core phones soon. hope it does not affect the browser when i have multiple tabs open

cool deal. I'm wondering how snappy it will continue to be once you start adding apps?

That 10:1 ratio wouldn't have anything to do with how the device is actually used would it? It's disingenuous, at best, to try and claim that bb's are 10 times more efficient than iphones.

How many 3rd party apps were installed on the one you used? My guess is none so your test is not based on real world experience. When I got my 9700 it seemed fast but then I installed some productivity apps. The phone is not that fast any more. It's still better than say 8320 but not shockingly fast. A faster processor will enable smooth multi-tasking. Have you tried watching Youtube or any video while downloading a file in the background? Its slow as crazy and videos are choppy. This is on WIFI.

It's a phone, not a computer. 624 is fine to operate the BB OS/Apps.

if we're having this conversation 5 yrs ago... i'm sure people will say you're crazy!
and they'll think you're talking about a Computer and not a smartphone.
but i do get your point.
and i also SEE their point.
if RIM is planning to have a blackpad by november.. for you to watch youtube, do facebook, twitter and all the other apps that make our lives interesting..
then it would hurt their sales if a phone can do all those efficiently.
no one's gonna buy the blackpad or the ipad for that matter.

Yes 624MHZ is under current phones launching but it depends on the OS. My former Droid had a down throttled 600MHZ but by far the fastest phone I had used. Now my Droid X with a 1GHZ OMAP is incredibly fast. Hopefully OS 6 is all that people say to help RIM. Lets also hope they do not put it on devices that can't support it via RAM. So far that appears to be the case unlike 5.0
    HTC Titan>Storm 9530>Tour 9630>Droid 1>Droid X>G2>iPhone>Moto Atrix also Wifes Torch.

Underpowered and small screen size/subpar resolution will keep this phone limited to the BB faithful.

Ya. Let's hope the new UI is less processor intensive and that the 512mb RAM helps with the apps.

I think OS6 will play a big part in keeping it running smoothly.......at least I hope so.

Until the next new BB drops!

I have Pocket Informant the best expensive app ever! I get reimbursed for mileage so I used Mileage Meter to track my miles, I used Ultimate lock because I don't like how new TMO OS locks. Also, I have some for news apps AP News, CNN and Time.

624 seems low in todays standard but can probably handle OS 6 fine. The only drawback is the pinch/zoom response, thats where it'll struggle a little.
