2G/3G makes the phone search for the best available network, thus using more battery. If you know you will have a solid 3G signal put it into just 3G. If you want to keep reception the whole time if you're moving from one location to another but don't know if 3G is available put it in 2G. I never had my 9800 in 3G/2G

Unless the OP has an AT&T Torch. If so, there is no 3G only setting.

Is it really draining within seconds? Literally? That seems a bit extreme. Sounds like something else is seriously wrong with the phone.

Mine can last all day with normal use on the 2G/3G setting (I have AT&T, so that's the only option other than "2G only").

I have an AT&T Torch on T-Mobile. No 3G only. Like Joel, mine last all day with moderate use and can last for days with light use.

smartphones are like that. once the 3g mode is selected and coupled with your sms and calls in between, the battery will run dry
