Vendor ID is used to identify your phone to the carrier that released it. The splash screen when you turn on the phone, possibly the theme, browser icon and other media are linked to that vendor.
For example, my phone is unlocked, I have all services functional, but it was released by Vodafone Spain [ES] and hence, the Vendor ID is 133. No matter which firmware I put on it, regardless of carrier, the splash screen will remain Vodafone, so will the browser icon. Unless I change the Vendor ID (complicated process)
