I hven't done it on an 8703e, but I don't see how that blackberry.alx file would be any different from the rest. Just make a backup of your BB, then give it a shot.

The point is to get more themes than the ones that came loaded. Here is an example of what you could have:
AT&T
BB Demension Icon
BB Deminsion Today
BB Deminsion Zen
O2 Today
02 Zen
Orange
Sprint
Telefonica Zen
TIM Zen
T-Mobile Zen
Verizon

Unlocking Themes
Anyone know how to do this on a Macintosh Computer? Or would it be easier to download the software on a Windows?

I've modified Motorola RAZR phones in much the same way, so I took the plunge today and followed your instructions and sure enough, the next time I synched my Pearl it loaded the modified files and reset.
It worked like a charm!!!!!

Unlocked the themes on my 8830 -GPS related file removed?
I was able to get this done with no problem however, I don't think its really worth the time for me. The themes it unlocked are nothing to write home about in my opinion, so unless you REALLY don't like what you have, it may not be worth the time.
One thing I did notice through the process of updating the OS is that the following file was removed: net_rim_bb_lbs_internal_gps
Is it possible this has something to do with VZW crippling the GPS? - 07-21-2007, 05:42 AM

This might be a Vista problem. I'm using XP and it works fine. Try saving it as a different file name. If it will allow you to do that... then go to the original blackberry.alx file and rename it to blackberry.alx.old. Now take the new file you just saved and rename it to blackberry.alx
Does that work??? - 07-21-2007, 02:59 PM

It will be with any OS, but you need to download and install the OS to your PC to find it.

I'm running Desktop v4.2.1.8 with an 8703. When I browse to the given folder for the .alx file, I only have the following: App loader, Modem Drivers, USB Drivers, and RIM Device Manager. None of these folders has the blackberry.alx file even with hidden files shown. Any ideas?

You have to have the Operating System for your device downloaded and installed on your PC.

You can download the 8703e OS from any other carrier that has it, like Verizon or Sprint. owever, you will also need to find and delete the Vendor.xml file if you do this. But it will work.
