I actually use iPhone earbuds. They work quite nicely. Word of warning, though: the microphone picks up *everything* if you're not careful, including rustling against clothes.
I use the "premium" blackberry earphones... I can't imagine spending $50 for them which is what some stores charge, but I got them for $10 and they do the job well. I like that they come with a leather case and 3 sets of ear gels. I also like that they have a mic and controls for the music (volume, play/pause, forward and back). I think they get plenty loud, but if you think its not loud enough, have you adjusted the EQ settings and used the Audio Boost setting?

Open the music player, press the BB Menu key, select Options, then select the check box next to "Audio Boost" and if you want to adjust the EQ, use the drop down menu on that page.
