Default Traveling to Canada

Hey guys,

I realize this is a question I could call Verizon about but I have had such bad luck in the past, that I figured I ask around here first.

I have a Storm2 on Verizon and I am taking a short trip to Montreal. I know that the Storm2 is supposed to be a "World Phone" but I think that just means it has GSM radios and I think Canada has CDMA networks, no?

Anyway, can anyone tell me (a) if my phone will work in Canada as it is, (b) if so is there anyway to avoid paying a fortune for using it while in Canada, and (c) if my phone won't work in Canada as it is now, what do I need to do to make it work?

Thanks,

Dave

Yes your phone will work as it is in Canada. Data will cost you approx $2.05 per MB over your CDMA connection. You will be roaming so whatever other roaming charges there are, there is that also. I dont know if you would be money ahead in activating the "world phone" part or not, but I know it is mostly so you can use your phone on the GSM networks of Europe, Asia, and Far East. I just spent the last week in Alberta and my phone worked fine, but made sure that data was turned off and only used the phone part to keep costs down. As long as there was cell coverage it worked great.

You can use the device as GSM, unlock your Blackberry storm and use a Canadian GSM carrier with prepaid sim card. just set the device to work with the network you are using there.

Your best bet is to use Rogers as they have BIS on a prepaid plan.

Call Verizon BEFORE you go and change to a Canadian plan, then call to cancel it after you come back. I think I used to buy a 10 or 30 day plan - it is a LOT cheaper than roaming charges. Hope they still have it.
