Do we know the Storm 2's processor yet?

From what I've heard, I believe it's the same as the Storm 1.

    Qualcomm MSM7600 528 MHz processor

This is the fastest processor that qualcomm makes at the moment for CDMA.

How about a dedicated graphics chip for 2D and 3D acceleration. 528mhz is more than enough for most day to day tasks but having a graphics chip would greatly improve the phone and put it on the same ground as a iPhone or Android phone except with the domination in the business and email area.

Thats just it. There is one in the current storm. The problem is that they are not utilizing it yet. They should not have to be told that a GPU processes faster than CPU.

Actually, the S1 only has a MP4 H264 decoder chip built into the processor for decoding movies for fast playback. As far as any OpenGL acceleration or anything like that, nothing exists on the current S1.

Thats incorrect ... it has been proven in many other threads in the s1 forum that the current processor does have open gl. I found the thread where the specs for the processor are posted ... i think it is like 9 posts down in a pdf file.

I hope they will bump the clock speed up to 624Mhz to match the Bold and the Tour.

S1 uses a Qualcomm MSM7600 chipset, it is already capable of 2D/3D OpenGl ES acceleration. Make no mistake, the Storm already has some serious horsepower under the hood. I've read that the MSM7600 chipset is more powerful than the one in the PSP and you know what kind of graphic it is capable of. The OS programmers just need to take advantage of it.

Yeah, an LS7 being fed with air through a straw. I really hope someday they do make use of it before I'm due for an upgrade.

From the specs sheets and teardowns that have been posted on the internet, it uses a software emulated version of Open GL ES that sends calls to the main core on the processor. I am looking for a graphics chip just like the one in the iPhone or the ATI chip thats being utilized in the HTC Dream for full hardware acceleration, not software.

CPU: The Storm (s1) utilizes the MSM7600 from Qualcomm, a dual core CPU with ARM11 400 MHz and ARM9 274 MHz. - From wiki. So, the clockspeed is faster, No?

I think they will probably use the MSM7200A chipset like the rest of the phones on the market at the moment like the Hero, Touchpro 2 and Diamond2. But who knows, maybe they will use an off the wall chipset from Qualcomm

Blazing fast 3D graphics rivaling the best dedicated handheld gaming devices
    • Advanced 2D/3D graphics support with up to 4 million 3D triangles per second,
and 133 million 3D textured pixels per second fill rate
    • Q3Dimension™ rendering engine with OpenGL® ES-compliant 3D graphics
    • Supported by leading third-party game titles
    • Dedicated hardware accelerating the entire 3D rendering process
    • Up to Video Graphics Array (VGA) resolution

This is right from the MSM7600 datasheet. It clearly says it has full hardware acceleration.

    Tour has a 528MHz MSM7600, exactly like the Storm's

MSM7200A is also a Qualcomm chipset. It isn't compatible with US CDMA networks such as Verizon, which is why the Storm uses the MSM7600 - what makes the MSM7600 so off-the-wall? Asides from CDMA capabilities, the specs appear identical, right down to CPU cores and clock speeds (as well as 3D capabilities)

My mistake, I thought the Tour shared the 624 Mhz processor with the Bold but I see the Bold doesn't run the MSM7600.

Actually, I believe the Bold is the only BlackBerry model to have a 624MHz processor, and that is why it is considered the flagship device. I'm pretty sure the Bold's chipset only works on GSM devices, though.

Yes and the Tour just has more RAM than the Storm which makes it operate slightly smoother
5.0.0.230 - Nice improvement to my Storm

The sheet shows this: "Dedicated hardware accelerating the entire 3D rendering process"

    Nuff Said.

The Storm's processor is far from being the slowest. I think you are confusing a slow OS with a slow processor.

The OS is currently where it should have been at the time of initial release IMO, but the Storm was released nine months ago. We should be farther along by now - there is still untapped potential.
