Default Odin, different screen click mechanism...is the noise gonna be 'mute-able'???

In all these 'Odin is the best thing in the world, and the original Storm is a POZ' I have noticed a lack of concern regarding the noise that the screen click makes on the Storm 2.

If this noise is not mute-able (mutable?) than I'm afraid that there will be a big problem for many of us who enjoy touchscreens and texting in obscure places. There is no way I could text with that noisemaker in a work meeting of any sort, or even in the movies (which I for one, never go out to but you get the point).

I sure hope that the popcorn sound won't be a 'have to live with' feature of this phone.

I probably won't be able to get it if I'm going to be the center of attention when texting.

I loved my Storm, although the lack of application memory, belabored surepress functionality, processor speed, and screen size were frustrating.

Now I have the Droid X. This phone is Light years ahead of the competition. I may keep my Storm for an alarm clock though. It sure is pretty.

Sal has already confirmed that the click can be disabled. If it doesn't come factory with the option, a 3rd party app will likely fix it.

I kind of like the clickity-click myself. I can't wait to annoy people with it on my bus to work. . However, its true that there are times when you need to be a discreet texter- like when you are in a super-boring meeting sitting waaaaay in the back of the room!

Its been reported that the click of the screen is very similar to the click of a keyboard on a keyboard berry.
You can't mute that sound so why the Storm 2?

I would also be very very happy to hear that a silent mode could be used. I always wish I could type silently, both on my phone and on my computer. I type emails, IM's and SMS's on my phone all the time and I work in a quiet place, so my coworkers would really appreciate my phone to be silent.

RIM makes two silent mode for the Ringer (Vibrate & Silent) and gives us a visual way to see any new message (flashing red light), plus has a place for headphones for listening to music while being silent to others, and even a dedicated Mute button. You would think that going all this way to make it silent to others that they would have a way to type silently ... after all that's one of the most essential parts of what a BlackBerry does, yet it's the only part that cannot be done silently.

Take notes in a meeting, reply to a text, jot down a reminder, capture a creative thought, write down a phone number or reference ... these are things that people use their phones for all the time, but that really require silent typing.

I believe you are wrong on this one, unless I missed it. Sal did experience a "glitch" where the sound wasn't working. However, it wasn't from him actually turning it off. It just happened. He did state that it seems logical that if the screen would still select without the sound, then it could possibly be a feature on the final OS build. This remains to be seen.

I should have phrased it better. There isn't an option to turn it off yet, but he has been able to accomplish this on all 3 of his Odin's.

Its mutable becasue the screen does not click. Keyboard BB's are mechanical keys that acctually click, on the S2 it simulates a click it dosnt acctually click, hence the ability to mute the noise.

The screen DOES click. The glass physically moves, just like the Storm 1. Kevin and Sal say so.

Quote:
Known Observations of the Storm 2's Screen Tech:
a) When powered off, the glass is fixed in position. You can push down on the display but it doesn't move.
b) Once powered up, when you push on the display the piece of glass moves down (you can physically see that the glass is moving, though the depth it moves down is less than Storm 1)
c) The glass is solid. So when you're pushing down, the actual sensation under the finger is that like Storm 1. The screen doesn't get mushy, it's not indenting inward at the place you touch, it's like Storm 1... the glass is smooth/hard and you feel the glass move down and get a distinct "click"/"press" type movement

Regarding "muting" of the screen. The sound doesn't come out the speaker. It's the sound of physical buttons (in the case of the Storm 2, four buttons). The only way this will be "mutable" is if RIM allows the click to be disabled, and allows just a touch to act as a confirmation, not just a selection. Based on Sal's observations, it sounds like RIM may allow this option.

I remember reading Sal say that it depends on the OS version in the phone. On whether or not you can disable the click.

Has it been mentioned that every video Sal does sound very tinty and has an echo in the room. It has to hv been

The on/off of the physical click is clearly software controlled, because when the phone is locked, it doesn't click. So, it is conceivable and probably likely RIM will give us the option to disable it.
