Notification lights keeps flashing after reading message?

I have a new problem in which the light which notifies new message continues to blink red even after I have read the messages.

The only way I have been able to solve the problem is through battery pull- a 7-10 minute process with the device. Any other ways to solve the problem?

I've had this problem from time to time... It usually happens to me when I click on my email icon as soon as the phone notifies me I have an email/message. Batt pulls help but in general I wait 30secs or more before clicking on the icon. More often then not that usually does the trick... patience.
