Okay now I'm convinced! PIEZO!!! lol

So there is actually 4 Piezo sensor pads...??

See my previous post for an added theoretical "edge view".
So maybe RIM has figured out a way to create electrical buttons powered by piezoelectricity.

I prefer to call it "Material X" - less "it's piezo' v.s "no it's not piezo" wars that way

No, I would say these are combination sensors. The standard buttons are definitely there. The discs are supplemental. They either:

Simply create a screen lock mechanism - "Material X" get's hard when there is no voltage applied.

OR

Serve dual purpose - harden / lock with no voltage AND sense pressure with voltage applied.

Either is possible. I have to say that the discs & material X would ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO be the way the screen gets firm when power is off. I just have no idea if they sense pressure when energized.

It would seem strange to have buttons AND pressure sensors - redundant. Nothing registers until you actually get the click of one of the regular buttons. And the touchscreen surface (digitizer) is enough to locate your finger positions, so pressure sensors aren't needed for that either.

I'm leaning towards each pad being a regular button with a power-off lock. BUT, there is the possibility that you could adjust the screens click-firmness by adjusting the voltage to those discs!

Hmmm.....

Maybe this is a hybrid between what S1 is and what S3 will be.

I had this theory that

S1-one button
S2-4 buttons +piezo hybrid
S3-no buttons+piezo+X

But that is just a theory.

I guess I see it as a three part movie.

Thanks, Kevin. Helpful information as I continue to ponder my next BB purchase.

Default piezo feedback

Those 4 'buttons' in the corner of the display are in fact piezo actuators that vibrate the screen. The haptics is not actually localized, but will feel that way. The Motorola Rokr E8 had a very similar design.

I'll laugh if RIM comes out and says those are just aluminum washers used as space fillers around the same button mechanism used in the S1, lol.

I'm not a rim engineer and I'm lmao at how speculation on the screen has some in a tizzy. You'd think actual breasts popped out when you clicked it. Lol
