Give it a few.. I can type much faster on the Storm2 than my work BB - Curve.. (yes Im a nerd with two BB on my hip!) And have larger than normal hands/fingers
it took me a good 2/3 weeks to master the screen...Life without my Blackberry?!?!?!?!? - 03-04-2010, 07:43 AM #28
Oh man, I'm going to have to disagree with the majority. I've had my storm2 since pretty much launch and to be quite honest I found it easier typing back then than I do now...and I'm starting to think maybe it was because I was a tad excited with the handset that I tolerated the many typos I made...
But now the wow factor has worn off, these little typos become major annoyances...! And your right there has been many occasion when I've felt like a dimwit sending a reply to someone important only to read back my response to see it filled with spelling errors. Grrrwwww!!!
I think of the many people who say they're fine with it, either A. Have small fingers/thumbs or B. More patience than I do.
Oh and p.s I've probably had to correct at least 10 - 15 typos in this reply! :-) -

Thanks for all the advice. I cracked the screen on my 8330 last night (still works though). I'll give the S2 a try.

It's funny you say that! I am in the exact same boat as you are. I had the Storm 2 since launch and got used to the typing pretty quick (came from the Bold). Since that time I find more and more errors in my emails (I am a heavy business user and do about 100-150 per day). I find myself getting annoyed with the device when I try to get out a quick reply and it is filled with errors. I just switched to the tour this week to give it a try and see which one I like better. btw, the loud clicking is VERY annoying during a quiet meeting (almost too loud to use without getting dirty looks)

Trial and Error Typing ! CONSTIPATING KEYBOARD
I switched from the Tour to the S2 mainly because of the larger display and touch screen functions. The friend that convinced me has big fingers and claimed that it was easy to type on the S2.
I was so frustrated with the typing that I decided to install beta version of the next OS because the keyboard display supposedly helps typing by showing the letter you are about to type larger to enable you to determine if you are on the correct "key". This is a feature that the iPhone supposedly has. Turns out that this new feature is garbage. The IDIOTS at RIM obviously must all have BB's with keyboards, because if they actually put down their crack pipes long enough to test the new keyboard feature, they would see that this new "magic" display actually makes using the thing more difficult. This is because this extra key display pops up just above the key you are trying to type. Half the time it's concealed by the very finger that is pressing the key and even it it were not, it pops up in a different place for each key. This causes the user to look around the display to locate the letter they are typing. So, ATTENTION GENIUSES AT RIM: PUT THE LARGER DISPLAY OF THE LETTER WHERE IT BELONGS: [SIZE="6"]IN THE CORRECT POSITION IN THE WORD IN THE TEXT BOX ..... WE SHOULDN'T HAVE TO MOVE OUR EYES ALL AROUND TO FIND WHETHER OR NOT WE'VE HIT THE CORRECT KEY! THE "IMPROVEMENT" MAKES A BAD SITUATION WORSE MOST OF US LOOK AT THE WORD WE ARE TYPING TO SEE IF IT IS CORRECT. WE SHOULDN'T HAVE TO DANCE AROUND THE SCREEN WITH OUR EYES.
REGARDLESS OF WHAT YOU SEE IN THE NEWS, SOME OF US HAVE JOBS AND DON'T HAVE EXTRA TIME TO SPEND DEALING WITH THE STORM2 CONSTIPATING KEYBOARD. - 03-04-2010, 06:02 PM #33

The beta OS has pop up icons for each letter so that you know which letter is being hit. Also, if you type in portrait mode and in suretype, its much faster although unrecognized words can be a little harder to manuver. However, it does learn your words as you type them so it does get easier. But keep practicing in portrait suretype and I think it will get better.
As for me, I type 100% faster on my storm 2 than I did with my old curve 8330Some say the glass is half full, some say the glass is half empty. I say “Are you gonna drink that?"

Nobody ever says what keyboard they are using...Landscape/Portrait/SureType/QWERTY...when they are having trouble typing. Which one you use makes a HUGE difference. I use the Portrait/SureType. I have FAT fingers, yet I can type like crazy on it and very few words are misspelled. After typing on it for a week or two and it "learns" your custom words/names and you can just fly without even looking at what you are typing, in fact, I was told on CB not to look and it made all the difference in the world. I type much faster on the S2 than the BB physical keyboard...and I have a job too!
P.S. I think you can turn off the letters "jumping out" at you. What kind of job do you have? I hope it isn't in customer satisfaction!

Thanks for all the advice - ordered a S2 today. Very excited. I'm sure the typing will get better as I use it.
If not, I will just go back to full QWERTY. No big deal. Though, the S2 is so sweet, I will not give up on it easily.
Thanks.People say, it's not the size of the boat, it's the motion of the ocean that counts....

Keyboard:
Portrait = SureType, which should be easier but i find its not. The major problem here is the fact the key rate cant keep up with the speed of which im typing.
Multi-tap is pita to use with the surepress screen and you can also forget using qwerty in portrait...having the keys all bunched up together...no thanks.
In landscape, like one of the previous posters said, the pop up keys doesnt really serve a useful purpose..personally I think they could be raised a little more above the key thats being pressed.
There's more gripes I have with it but none come to mind right now.
oh and the person who ask if we read what we type...on occasion I do, but when you're in a fast conversation...It's just natural for me to go in to type flow... for in my mind, I'm spelling and typing the correct words/buttons. I believe its the software that's not intuitive enough. - 03-05-2010, 08:20 AM #41
much easier
give yourself another couple of weeks and you will love surepress . . . you will be able to type just as quickly as your old phones

Step by step guide to master typing on storm
I came from a curve and like everyone says there is a definite learning curve here are a few things to speed up the learning Process:
1) BUILD YOUR AUTO TEXT LIBRARY- any time you make a typo go options/autotext, and add that to your library with the word you want to replace the typo with
2) UPDATE TOO A LEAKED OS!!! .451 or hybrid .497 totally charge the typing experience, they also add pop up letters. Dont be afraid, the update process is fool proof search the forums for update steps here is a link to the .451 forum which will answer all ?'s about the os and provide A download linkhttp://forums.crackberry.com/f145/storm-2-9550-os-5-0-0-451-findings-fixes-422692/
3) contrary to popular belief suretype is not the answer Learn to use full keyboard in portrait mode. once you update the os this will be the fastest input method and the closest you can get to the size of your bold keyboard.
4)finally trust yourself. i find that i make most of my errors when i am up tight trying too hard. let your fingers fly if you spend the time building your auto text library most will be corrected
