Default It's not that bad of a phone

Once I accepted the fact that this phone is a pos and that RIM will never get another penny from me again. I started to enjoy this phone more. I have the 9550 on a Verizon contract, grandfathered into the unlimited data plan.

Whatever negative things people have to say about the phone are all true. The difference with me is I find ways to fix the short comings the best I can. Short battery life? Purchased extra battery off Amazon for $5 and extra chargers. I've updated the os a few times to try to improve the performance of the phone but nothing I did really fixed the issues I was having. Solution? Got an wifi iPad and tether it off the BB. Followed a couple of steps to jailbreak the iPad and I'm running it without paying Verizon an extra dime.

So, in conclusion, I now have an iPad 2 to do all the fun tech stuff and I'm very pleased to be able to use the Storm 2 as a modem. For those times when I don't have the iPad with me, I can still use the BB.

On another note, broke the screen a few months back and looked into getting the phone replaced with the insurance plan. Come to find the deductible was $99. I got on eBay and bought myself a new screen for $40 and canceled the insurance. Hate the cellphone industry almost as much as I hate the oil industry. But I can claim my small victories against them and one day they will get what's coming to them!

I totally agree. The Storm2 is a pretty good workhorse. Mine is about two years old (2 yrs in Oct) and is still going strong. I don't have it loaded with the latest OS - it's still running 500 something (587?). And it doesn't have a ton of apps - just a weather app and a couple games and a news reader - and an occasional theme that I load with BBSAK.. I figure I got my money's worth out of it (if any one can these days). Now that the top power/standby button has gone bad, I use a freebie app to lock/unlock the screen.

But I canceled the insurance long ago when I had a feature phone - eBay has always keep me happy with backup phones for a quarter of what I'd pay yearly for insurance.

The Torch might be an awesome phone but RIM has lost my business after my experience with the Storm 2. I'm going to keep this phone until there is a huge leap in data speed. I don't know if 4G is enough for me to make the shift. Right now I'm satisfied with my slow ***, random rebooting pos Blackberry. All it needs to do is email, and tether my iPad 2

Running 5.0.0.1082

A few games, a few apps, that's it.

Haven't had any problems I haven't been able to fix. Biggest problem is memory leak with applications, but other than that I can go a full day without a charge (and light usage).

I'll be sticking with my S2 unless something amazing comes out. BB 7 is kinda meh, i'd rather just turn the menus off. I like the click touch of the S2, if I wanted just a touchscreen, i'd go with the iPhone. BB7 is also starting to look like Android and I don't care for their OS, so what other phone is there to buy? Plus the new Torch eliminated the left convenience key that I use for Quicklaunch.

I've had mine for 2 years this October. Got this thing bogged down with apps, but still 58mb free. Still runs well. The hardware is solid. The software, well...I'm running .1015. It is what it is. I'll be sticking with it for a good while. If Verizon gets one of the Nokia WP7 devices next year...maybe. For now, though, it's me and Odin.

I reverted back to .517 as people swears by it. I had .607 installed for the past week because .1082 would not allow me to use my phone as a modem. It would forward me to the Verizon page whenever I tried to do anything with Safari on the iPad. But .1082 seems to run pretty good, it is still installed on the wife's 9550 but she's complaining about battery life so I might revert hers to .517 also. .607 though was junk, random restarts, big lag with keyboard inputs, just basically laggy everywhere. That is where most of the hate is coming from. I've always hated this thing but .607 and most of the other firmwares out there really pisses me off. Hopefully .517 will stop the lag and restarts. Hardware is slow enough as it is, compound that with bad software and you have the Storm 2. RIM abandoned the 9550 like I've abandoned RIM and I tell everyone I know how crappy this phone is so I'm doing my small insignificant part in taking business away from these jackasses. It is serving it's purpose for now, so I'm happy about that but it's role has diminish to just being a modem and phone for me to have something positive to say. Before I got this iPad and I was trying to use the BB like an android or iPhone, I would have to literally LOL at how bad it was. Ok, enough venting.

Sorry to hear that but ironically I am running .607 and couldn't be happier...weird how it is fine for some and not for others.

I would still have the storm 2 if rim would of released a decent OS. The form factor and surepress was awesome IMO. But as we all know RIM has abandon the storm series. They would of had there own niche in the touch screen market with a lot of followers. With this economy the way it is smartphone sales will start to drop of more than they are now and only the models that perform will sell!

Been using .517 for a few days now and i like it so far. The funny thing is that I had this OS on my hard drive which means that I've installed this OS before. It was probably during the time when I still had hope for this phone and was playing around with hybrids and updating OS as soon as one comes out. I don't know what I'm giving up by downgrading from .1082 but I know I've gained some of the responsiveness back. The surepress doesn't act stupid and seems to be snappier. The battery life is pretty good. Looks like it'll be .517 for the rest of this phone's life. This phone is going anywhere. There's no 4G LTE coverage around my house and work so I'm going to make this 9550 work.
