Back to .320
Ok, let me first start by saying I still have my launch-date S2, I have not exchanged it. I had kept .320 on it for a long time because, frankly, I had 0 issue with how it worked. yeah, my home screen icons didn't update, but that was about the only thing I had noticed...and after seeing so many folks here rave about improvements in new leaks (.428 and .451) and hybrids, I decided to give some of them a try. I think I've come to the conclusion that while there were definitely a few "lemons" out there that just didn't work with the original OS, I seem to have gotten lucky, because mine actually seems to really work best with the stock .320 OS.
For about a week (for each) I tried both the full .451, and then Tank's Act 2 hybrid (and let me say that Tank did do a great job, and I'm in NO way bashing his work here).
Here, however, is why I have ultimately decided to "downgrade" back to .320
1. Battery life -- for the most part, while idle, battery life was pretty equal to that of .320 on both .451 and the hybrid, however I found that while using the phone the battery drained A LOT faster, and even noticed a faster drain while using some of my apps, particularly Slacker radio.
2. Screen lock -- there were several times while running the hybrid that the screen would lock while switching from portrait to landscape, or vice-versa. Granted, I could easily unlock it by by pressing the lock button, but strange none the less. Not sure if this was unique to me or not, but never experienced it with .320.
3. Screen response -- This may be unique to my device as well, but I actually found that screen response (click and sensitivity) is much better on .320 than it was on .451 or the hybrid. It seems that many seem to feel the opposite, but this was not the case for me.
4. Native Browser -- on .320, I can leave it on "hotspot" browser, and it automatically switches to Internet Browser when no WIFI is available, but this is not the case with the later OS's. I didn't' really notice too much of an effect on browser speed across OS version either, although if I had to evaluate, .451 was the fastest over WIFI or network, so I may have downgraded a bit there...but not enough to really notice.
So that's my story. I'm not trying to start some sort of war here, just posting my experience. With my S1, I tried every leak available, and was never 100% happy, but the S2 is a MUCH better device, and I can definitely say that no matter what OS I've had on it, I like it a lot better...but so far I've been most satisfied with how .320 operates on MY Storm2. I guess my point is that there may really be some hardware variations out there, that can have a drastic effect on how different OS's work on individual devices.
Oh, and just for the record, I've never had an issue with my bottom buttons "sticking", although they do stiffen up a bit when on a flat surface while running .320 (again, not a deal breaker for me, but I do understand that many people had more serious issue with this). - 03-12-2010, 09:52 PM #3
Thanks for the good feedback. I like when there is a straight up intelligent post about what someone has to say about their device. Stick with what works for you. I do wish the hotspot browser switching when not on WIFI was on the OS leaks

theres no flipping way the stock OS performed better than one of the many gold code hybrids that are out there.
Im not knocking the hybrid builders themselves because they do put alot of time into them but lets be real here. My S2 performs just as well if not better on a regular OS than compared to ANY hybrid. If you dont change the radio file then its really pointless.

Wish I was able to upgrade. Being on a corporate network sucks. No OS upgrades and if an app is "fun" forget it.
