9550 gprs/mms help
Help please...
Got a hand me down 9550 from my sister from the U.S., and had this unlock here in the Philippines. Currently using a smart prepaid sim, but cannot do the internet or mms on this 9550. However, I can use the phone to make/receive calls, send/receive text, but no internet or mms.
Spoke to smart rep and had the GPRS activated. But was referred to BB for further assistance. After some minor tweaking I got the """edge""" on the screen, but no BB logo and """3G""" characters. The only time I can get the """edge""" would be if I set it to 2G. I received an email from a smart care specialist telling me that the connection might be intermittent (it cant be my house is just like about 300ft away from a smart cellsite), frequency incompatibility (can't be as well. this phone was used before here when my sister was last here the last time and did wireless internet and mms. This was verizon before.) If frequency would not be compatible, then making phone calls and sending text would be a problem, right?
Seems like there might be some more settings that needs to be tweek. Hope someone can help here.
I'm open to changing carriers, like Globe, or Sun, if it helps. Or at least the mms should work.
Patiently waiting...
Peace everyone... - 01-15-2012, 07:26 AM #2
First, you need the data service specifically for BlackBerrys in order to use the BlackBerry browser and other BlackBerry apps that require data. Also, many third-party apps require BlackBerry data, and I believe also for MMS. Some carriers will provide a free BlackBerry add-on to enable MMS, if I recall correctly.
You buy the BlackBerry data service from your provider/carrier, assuming it supports BlackBerrys. To repeat, it is not a generic smartphone data plan; it is specifically for BlackBerrys and is in place of a generic smartphone data plan. - 01-15-2012, 08:13 AM

The smart care rep did ask me to register in the host routing table and I got "register message sent" then ok. And this was sent like 2 days ago. No reply, no response, no activity. Nothing. Should I be getting something? There might be some filters that might be blocking the incoming response. Oh, I dont know. I'm so lost. I'm more than willing to troubleshoot this issue if only someone will have the patience to walk me thru this.

I meant to end my previous post with the question, Do you have the BlackBerry data plan (BlackBerry data service) on your account?
That is the first question. Have you had it added to your account.
If so, the next question is whether it is setup properly on the carrier's end. If happens. It once occurred that T-Mobile entered the wrong date on my account and it took me talking to three rep's before they figured it out.
If you don't have the BlackBerry data plan, you need to buy it.
If you did buy it, there is usually nothing you need to do, but manually registering the HRT should have fixed it. Just to make sure, get in a location where the mobile signal is good, then remove the battery for about 30 seconds.
If it tll isn't working, and if you have bought the BlackBerry data plan, then call your carrier/service provider and ask them to double check your account on their end. - 01-15-2012, 09:06 AM

I have the data plan. I dont know where you are but we have budgeted day to day internet service available with our provider for blackberry. I was subscribed for the day for that. Smart (my provider) confirmed that I had the GPRS activated, and the blackberry plan for the day. But I'm not getting anything from the """register now""" from host routing table. That was our last step that day.

My location is in my profile.
What you describe is what I observed during the incident I describe when I had a data plan but T-Mobile messed up my account.
It sounds to me like, for whatever reason, your service provider is not activating the data service on your device.
The only other thing I can think of is this. If your service provider provides a website for customers to use to add/remove/edit BIS email, it probably has a provision for the user to enter or change the device PIN, etc. You would be able to see what device is listed now, or change it if necessary. You would also find out if the system even recognizes you as having a BIS account.
Or, you can call customer service again, be polite, and be persistant until you get an answer. It is their problem (even if it is something on your end) and they need to fix it (or tell you how to fix it).
I'm out of ideas. Sorry.- Ira - 01-15-2012, 09:54 AM

Blackberry 9550 help
i'm not familiar with the services that smart provides because it happened to my Storm 2 when i used a SMART SIMCARD so i tried Globe.. Globe provides a stable Blackberry Data Plan service.. try switching to Globe and use BBMAX50 send it to 8888 to try it out(it requires Php 50 load and 1 pesos to continue using the plan and its for 1 day only) after your subscription you will recieve a message saying: your "edge" will now turn to EDGE and you can now use GPRS and MMS services.. after that go to advanced options>Host routing table>BB button>send request..... wait for a message from blackberry that says: Your device is now connected. Look at the edge sign and wait for it to turn to All caps EDGE or 3g with a Blackberry symbol ( usually takes about a couple of minutes) and then your Done
